GREY-

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1877, by

C. S. HENRY,

In the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.

Press of J. J. Little & Co.,
Nos. 10 to 20 Astor Place, New York.

DEAR BISHOP:

JOHN WILLIAMS, D.D., LL.D.,

Bishop of Connecticut..

Some weeks ago, while this little volume of Essays and Sketches was passing through the press, I asked permission to inscribe it to you. I thought then only of the pleasure I should have in publicly testifying to the affectionate respect I entertain for you; and you did not probably think, any more than I at that time did, of the risk you ran in permitting a book to be dedicated to you which you had not read. There are, indeed, in the book a few passages expressing opinions and sentiments which you will probably dissent from, and would not wish to be thought of as standing sponsor for. I wish it therefore to be understood that you are not responsible for any thing which either you or other readers of these Essays may disbelieve or dislike. All that you are responsible for is your good-natured kindness in giving me this opportunity of subscribing myself most truly and heartily,

Your friend and servant,

STAMFORD, CT., June 2, 1877.

C. S. HENRY.
