36 Incline my heart thy laws to keep,
and cov'nants to embrace:
And from all filthy avarice,

Lord, fhield me with thy grace.

7 From vain defires and worldly lufts turn back my eyes and sight: And with the Spirit itrengthen me, to walk thy ways aright,

38 Confirm thy gracious promife, Lord, which thou hart made to me, Who am thy fervant, and do love, and nothing fear but thee.

39 Reproach and fhame which I fo fear, from me, Lord, expel: For thou doft judge with equity, and therein doft excel.

42 So fhall I ftop the flanderous mouths of lewd men and unjuft: For in thy faithful word is all

my conndence and truft.

43 The word of truth within my mouth let evermore be pret: For in thy judgments wonderful

my hope doth always reft.

44 And whilft that breath within me doth this mortal life preserve,

Yea, till this world thall be diffolv'd, thy law will I observe.

45 So walk will I as fet at large, from dread and danger free: caufe I ftudy how to keep thy precepts faithfully.

46 Thy noble as I will defcribe

as things of most great fame: Even before kings I will them blaze, and fhrink no whit for Chame.

47 I will rejoyce then to obey

thy jutt commands and will: Which evermore I have lov'd beft;

and fo will love them till. 48 My hands I will lift to thy lawn, which I have dearly fought: And practife thy commandments all in word, in deed, and thought. The Seventh Part.

49 Thy promife which thou mad it to me remember, Lord, I pray. For therein have I put my truft and confidence alway

So It is my comfort and my joy, when troubles me aflail:

For were my life not by thy word, it fuddenly would fail.

51 The proud, and fuch as God contemn; ftill make of me a fcorn:

Yer will I not thy law forfake

as if I were forelorn:

52 But call to mind, Lord, thy great works fhew'd to our fathers old: Whereby i feel my joy furmount my grief a hundred fold.

53 Horrour hath taken hold on mej because the wicked do

Forfake thy righteous law, and will have no regard thereto.

54 But as for me, I fram'd my fongs thy ftatutes to exalt,

When I among the ftrangers dwek,
and grief did me aflauit.

55 I thought upon thy Name, O Lord,
by night when others fleep:
Thy law alfo I kept always,
and ever will it keep.

56 This grace I did obtain, because
thy covenants mot dear

I did embrace and alfo keep with reverence and fear.

The Eighth Part.

CHETR

57 O God, wh art my part and lot, my comfor and my ftay,

I have decreed and promifed

thy laws to keep alway. 58 With my whole heart I humbly fu' in prefence of thy face: As thou therefore kait promised, Lord, grant to me thy grace. 59 My life I have examined, and try'd my fecret heart, Which to thy statutes caufed me my feet straight to convert. 60 i did not tay nor linger long; as they that flothful are: But haftily thy laws to keep I did my felf prepare.

61 The cruel bands of wicked men have made of me their prey:

Yer would I not thy taw forget, nor from thee go aftray.

62 Thy righteous laws and judgments are Lo very great and high,

[blocks in formation]

65 According to thy promife, Lord, fo haft thou with me dealt: For of thy grace in fundry forts,

have I thy fervant felt.

66 Teach me to judge always aright, and give me knowledge fure:

For ftedfaftly I do believe

thy precepts are moit pure.

67 Before that I afflicted was,

I err'd and went aftray:

But now I keep thy holy word, and make it all my ftay.

81 My foul doth faint and ceafeth not thy faving health to crave:

And for thy words fake till I trust

my hearts desire to have.

82 My eyes do fail with looking for thy word, and thus I fay,

Oh when wilt thou me comfort, Lord) why doft thou thus delay?

83 Like as a bottle in the moke, fo am I parcht and dry'd:

68 Thou art both good and gracious, Lord, Yet will I not out of my heart

and in thy gifts moft free: Thy ordinances how to keep therefore, O Lord, teach me.

69 The proud and the ungodly have
againit me forg'd a lye:
Yet thy commandiments ftill obferve
with all my heart will I.

70 Their hearts are ev: like unto brawn, which is exceeding

:

But in thy law do I delight, and nothing feek but that.

71 O happy time, may I well fay,

when thou didit me correct: That I thereby might learn thy laws and never them reje&.

72 So that thy word and law to me is dearer manifold,

Than gold and filver in great fums

or ought that can be toid.

The Tenth Part.

JOD.

73 Thy hands have made and fashion'd me, thy creature, Lord, am I:

Make me to understand thy iaw,

and keep it faithfully.

74 So they that fear thee fhall rejoyce
whenever they me fee
Because I have learn'd by thy word
to put my trust in thee.

75 I know, O Lord, thy judgments all,
moft juft and righteous be:
And that in very faithfulness,
thou haft affifted me.

76 Now of thy goodness I thee pray
fome comfort to me fend:
And as thou haft me hitherto,
O Lord, ftill me defend.

77 Thy tender mercies pour on me,
then fhall I fely live,
For joy and confolation both
thy law to me doth give.

let thy commandments flide.

84 How long, O Lord, fhall I yet live before I fee the hour:

That on my foes which me torment, thy vengeance thou wilt pour? 8 Prefumptuous men have digged pica, thinking to make me fure:

Thus quite contrary to thy law, my hurt they do procure.

86 But thy commandments are all true; and caulefs they me grieve To thee therefore I do complain, that thou may'ft me relieve.

87 Almoft they had me clean destroy'd, and brought me quite to ground: Yet by thy ftatures i abode,"

and therein fuccour found. 88 Reftore me, Lord, again to life, thy mercies do excel:

And fo fhall I thy ftatutes keep, till death my iffe expel.

The Twelfth Part.

LAMBD.

891n heav'n, O Lord, where thou doft dwell thy word is ftablifht fure:

And thall to all eternity

faft fetti'd there endure.

90 From age to age thy truth abides,
as doth the earth witness:

Whofe ground work thou haft laid fo fum
as no tongue can exprefs.

91 Even to this day we may well fee
how thou dost them preferve:
According to thy ordinance,
for all things do thee ferve.
92 Had it not been that in thy law
my foul had comfort fought:
Long time e're now in my diftref
I had been brought to nought.
93 Therefore wi I thy precepts keep
in memory fuls faft:
Because

[ocr errors]

Becaufe that thou by them, O Lord,
my life reftored halt.
94 No man to me can title make,
for him only chine:

Save me therefore, for to thy law,
my ears and heart incline,

95 The wicked men that feek my bane,

for me do lie in wait:

But I will meditate upon
thy teftimonies great.

96 For nothing in this world I fee
which hath at length no end:
But thy commandments and thy word
beyond all time extend.

The Thirteenth Part. MEM.
97 What great defire and fervent love
unto thy law I bear:
On it my daily ftudy is,
that fo I may thee fear.

98 Thy word hath taught me to exceed Lain wisdom all my foes:

For they are ever with me, and
do give me fweet repofe.

99 My teachers who did me inftru&,
in knowledge I excel:
Because I do thy ftatutes keep,
and them to others tell.
100 In wifdom I do far furpas
the ancient men alfo :

And that because I keep thy laws,
and fo refolve to do.

101 My feet I have refrain'd likewife
from ev'ry evil way:
That fo I might thy word obferve
and keep without delay.

[ocr errors]

1021 have not from thy judgments fwerv'd

nor fhrunk as thou canft tell: Because thou haft me taught thereby to live godly and well.

103 O Lord, how fweet unto my tafte I find thy words alway!

Doubtless no hony in my mouth

doth tafte fo fweet as they.

109 My foul is ever in my hand
great dangers me affail:
Yet do I not thy law forget,
nor it to keep will fail.

110 Altho' the wicked laid their neto
to make of me a prey,

Yet from thy precepts did I not
once fwerve or go aftray,

111 Thy law, O Lord, I taken have
my heritage to be:

Becaufe fuch great delight and joy
it doth afford to me.

112 For evermore I have been bent
thy ftatutes to fulfil

Even fo likewife unto the end

I will continue ftill.

The Fifteenth Part. SAME CR. 113 All thoughts that vain and wicked are I do always deteft:

But for thy precepts and thy laws

I ever love them belt.

114 Thou art my hid and fecret place,
my thield and ftrong defence:
Therefore have I thy promifes
look'd for with confidence.
115 Therefore ye evil doers all
away from me be gone:

For the commandments will I keep
of God my Lord alone.

116 As thou hast promis'd, fo perform
that I may live and be

Never afhamed of the hope

which thou haft given me.
117 Uphold me, and I fhall be fafe,
for ought they do or fay;
And in thy ftatutes pleasure take
I will both night and day,

118 Under thy feet thou haft trod fuch
as do thy ftatutes break:
For nought avails their fubtilty,
their counfel is too weak.

119 Like drofs thou caft'ft the wicked u
wherever they do dwell:

104 Thy laws have me fuch wifdom learn'd Therefore can I as thy comma ds,

that I do hate therefore

All wicked and ungodly ways, and will do evermore.

The Fourteenth Part NuN. 105 B'en as a lantern to my feet, to doth thy word fhine bright, And to my paths where I do go it is a flaming light.

106 I have both worn and will perform
in truth and faithfulness,
That I will keep thy judgments juft,
and them in life exprefs.
107 Afi&ion hath me fore oppreft,
and brought me to deaths door
D Lord, as thou haft promifed,
fo me to life reftore.

108 The free-will-offerings of my mouth
which I to thee do give,
Accept, and teach me how I may
after thy judgements live.

love nothing half fo well.

120 My Beth doth quake forar of the
my foul is much ditmaid:

By reafon of thy judgments great
my heart is fore afraid.

The Sixteenth Part. A.IN.

121 I do the thing that lawful is, and give to all men right: Refign me not to them that would opprefs me with their might. -122 But for thy fervant furety be

in that thing which is right: And never let the proud opprefa me with their rage and ipite. 123 My eyes do fail with waiting for thy health which I do crave. And for thy righteous promife, Lord whereby thou wilt me fave. 124 Entreat thy fervant lovingly, and favour to him fhew.

And

And thy commands moft excellent

teach me alfo to know.

125 Thy humble fervant, Lord, I am, grant me to understand, How by thy ftatutes I may know best what to take in hand. 126 It is now time, Lord, to begin, for truth doth quite decay :

Thy law likewife they have made void, and none doth it obey.

127 This is the caufe wherefore I love thy laws much more than gold, Or Jewels fine, which are efteem'd

mott coftly to be fold.

128 I thought thy precepts all most juft, and fo them kept in ftore: All crafty and malicious ways

I greatly do abhor.

The Seventeenth Parr. PE. 129 Thy covenants are wonderful. and full ofthings profound: My foul therefore doth keep them fure, when they are try'd and found. 130 The entrance of thy word doth give to men a light moft clear: The fimple likewife understand when they it read or hear. 131 My mouth I open'd and did pant, because my foul did long

For thy commandments, which always do guide my heart and tongue. 132 With mercy and compaffion, look, upon me from above,

As thou art wont fuch to behold

as thy Name fear and love.

133 DireЯ my footsteps by thy word,
that I thy will may know:
And never let iniquity

thy fervaat overthrow.

(harms

134 From flandrous tongues and deadly
preferve and keep me fure:
Thy precepts then will I obferve,
with heart upright and pure.
35 Thy countenance which doth furpafs
the fun in its bright hue,

I et fhine on me, and by thy law
teach me what to efchew.
36-Rivers of waters from my eyes
incefiantly do fall:
Because I fee how wicked men
thy laws keep not at all.

The Eighteenth Part. TZ ADI. 137 In ev'ry thing, Lord, thou art juft, although the wicked grudge: And when thou doft fentence pronounce, thou art a righteous judge. 138 To render right and Bee from guile are two chief points moft high: And fuch as thou haft in thy law commanded us ftraitly.

139 My zeal hath ev'n consumed me,
and I am pin'd away,
Because my foes thy word forget,
and will it not obey.

140 Thy word is very pure and doth greatly my heart rejoyce: Therefore thy fervant nothing more can love or make my choice. 141 And though I be nothing fet by, as one of bate degree: Yet do I not thy laws forget,

nor fhrink away from thee. 142 Thy truth and righteoufnefs, O Lord, for ever fhall endure:

Alfo thy law is truth it felf,

moft conftant and meft pure.

143 Anguish and grief have feiz'd on me, and brought me wondrous low: Yet of thy precepts do I ftill delight to hear and know.

144 The righteoufnefs of thy commands doth laft for evermore:

Then teach them me, because in them my life lies up in ftore.

The Nineteenth Part. KOPH. 145 With fervent heart I call'd and cry'd now anfwer me, O Lord: That thy commandments to obferve I fully may accord.

146 To thee, my God, I make my fuit,

Thy teftimonies then will I
always keep and obey.

147 To thee do I cry in the morn
before the day appear:
For in thy word I put my truft,
and thee alone do fear:

148 My eyes prevent the night-watches
before they call, I wake:
That meditating on thy word,

I might fome comfort take."
149 Incline thy ears to hear my voice
and pity on me take:

As thou waft wont, fo quicken me,
left life fhould me forfake.
150 My foes draw near, and greedily
do after mifchief run:

Far from thy law they are gone back,
and wickedly it fhun.

151Therefore, O Lord, approach theu ne
fince need doth fo require:
For all thy precepts are moft true,
then help, I thee defire.

152 Concerning thy commandments,]
have learned long ago,
That they remain for evermore,
thou haft them grounded fo.
