8 My life, whilst thou preserv'st my life, Thy sacrifice shall be; Unite my soul to Thee ! 354. Creation and Providence. (C. M.) 1 I ORD, when our raptur'd thought surv U Creation's beauties o'er ; And bid our souls adore. Thy radiant footsteps shine ; And speak their source divine. In earth, and sea, and air; Almighty power declare. 4 Thy wisdom, power, and goodness, Lord, In all thy works appear; Man, thy distinguish'd care! That breath thy power maintains ; His brittle frame sustains. Of reason's light possess'd; Still more divinely bless'd. 7 Tby providence, his constant guard, When threat’ning woes impend; Or timely succours lend. With gentle smiling rays ; Thy goodness and thy praise ! 355. Every Creature at God's Command. (P. M.) ITLIJAH'S example declares, Whatever distress may betide, To him, who will always provide. Occasion'd a famine of breaa, By ravens was constantly fed. 2 More likely to rob than to feed, Were ravens who live upon prey; His goodness will find out a way. Who know not how faith can prevail ; Than one of God's promises fail. 3 Nor is it a singular case ; The wonder is often renew'd ; And many may say, to God's praise, By ravens he sendeth them food. Thus worldlings, though ravens indeed, Though greedy and selfish their mind, If God has a servant to feed, Against their own will can be kind. 4 Thus Satan, the raven unclean, That croaks in the ears of the saints, Administers oft to their wants : From all the temptations they feel : Has belp'd me to many a meal. Who on the good Shepherd rely! Their wants he will surely supply: All creatures obey his command : And leave all my cares in his hand. FALL OF MAN. 356. Original and actual Sin confessed. (L. 1 I ORD, I am vile, conceiv'd in sin; U And born unholy and unclean; Corrupts the race, and taints us all. 2 Soon as we draw our infant breath, The seeds of sin grow up for death ; 3 Great God, create my heart anew, The leprosy lies deep within. Nor hyssop branch, nor sprinkling priest, Can wash the dismal stain away. 7. Original Sin. Rom. v. 12. Job xiv. 4. (C. M.) [ RACKWARD with humble shame we look D On our original; In our first father's fall! But prone to all that's ill; 3 Conceiv'd in sin, (O wretched state !) Before we draw our breath; Iniquity and death. The old corruption reigns ; Wanders through all our veins ! Will all the branches be; From such a deadly tree? . 6 What mortal power, from things unclean, Can pure productions bring ? From an infected spring ? Can make our nature clean ; The tempter, death, and sin. The ruins of the first; That new creates our dust. 358. Conviction of Sin by the Moral Law. Rom. vii. 8, &c. (C. M.) 1 I ORD, how secure my conscience was, U And felt no inward dread ; And thought my sins were dead. |
