my desire. So we see that after all the evil, and sin, and the disobedience of the Church of God, or his own house, that yet he still holds fast his faith in the covenant of grace, which is by Jesus Christ our Lord. (2 Sam. xxii. 5. Now, we see in another place, that by prayer, how that the church desireth to be directed into the flock of Christ.. Tell me, saith she, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? And is not this as follows Christ's sweet answer to his church? If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds' tents. (Solomon's Song i. 7, 8.) So I believe that she is directed by prayer to the word of God, and to the evangelists, or his ministers, to the way of life everlasting, which is by Jesus Christ our Lord. And now, my friends, hear how Christ prayeth for his church. Father, I will, saith he, that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am: that they may tehold my glory which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. (John xvii. 24.) And our blessed Lord also forewarns us of erro, that when we pray we should pray in secret, as well as in public, that our prayers may be heard in heaven, as well as on the earth. For, saith he, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matt. vi. 6.) And again, we should also be very cautious how we act in a public place of worship, and that there be no dissembling among us; but that we should, in the spirit, with one accord, do as the Apostles of Christ did after his ascension into glory. For these all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. (Acts i. 14.) Therefore, let us endeavour to follow these good examples. the eyes of the Lord, saith Peter, are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. (1 Peter ii. 12.) Righteous art thou, O Lord, when I plead with thee; yet let me talk with thee. O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (Jer. xii. 1.-xvi. 23.) But I know, O Lord, that is, for all these things thou will be sought unto. O Lord, by the spirit of

prayer in Christ do men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit, and by faith and prayer through g ace, O Lord thou didst deliver the three Hebrew children from the flames of the burning fiery furnace. And by prayer O Lord, thou saved Daniel thy servant from the devouring lions. And thou, bles ed Lord Jesus, by prayer and suffering are ready and willing to save all that will come unto thee, before they reach the flames of hell, for to some great importance was thy agonizing prayer, O thou bles ed Lamb of God, when hou prayed so earnestly, as to sweat as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke xxii. 44.) And this was all done for our salvation; and by the grace of the Lord Jesus, may we all pray, and never faint, but praise and pray our way to heaven. Amen.

- THE AUTHOR'S PRAYER.

O Lord be thou pleased to hear my prayer, and let my cry come unto thee; thou hath O Lord heard the prayers of thy se. vants of old, and hast been a present help to them in the days of their tro bles, and may it please thee O Lord, now to be a present help to us in the days of our troubles, for thou art the same O Lord as in years that are past; and thy promi-es fail not, but thy mercies a e new every morning, even from everlasting to everlasting thou are the same God, and blessed are all them that put their trust in thee.

upon

And may it still please thee O Lord, as to look down our highly favoured nation, and have mercy upon us through the merits of thy dear Son, and may thou convince us all of sin, so that we may feel a deep conviction for the same, and that we may repent so that it may please thee to convert us all from sin, so that we may by thy grace reform our errors, and leave off all ill courses of this sinful life, and turn unto thee. with a whole desire of soul, so that we may be delivered out of the han! of the grand enemy of souls, and at last be bought to thin everiast.ng kingdom above, through Je us Christ our Lord.

And may it please thee O Lord to look down upon Victoria, our young and Gracious Queen, and bless her in her youthful days, and endue her with thy heavenly grace, faith, wis

dom, peace, and love; O endue her with thy heavenly blessings which the world cannot do, neither can it take it from her, if she loves and serves her God aright.

O that it may please thee O Lord as to make her a real Christian indeed, and that she may still remember her Creator in the days of her youth, and that she may love her Gracious Redeemer, as superior above all things.

O that thou O Lord may be pleased as to endue young VicTORIA Our Queen with heavenly wisdom and love, so that she may reign and rule as a Queen of wisdom and love upon the earth, so that all her good efforts may prove to be of some good effect, and that for the King of wisdom and glory above. And O that it may still be fulfilled in her days, as it is written, And Kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their Queens thy nursing mothers.

And O that our Queen VICTORIA may become a blessed mother indeed to her Church and people, and that she may be as an instrument in the hand of her God, and that of supporting holy religion, and that she may hear the humble petition of her people, and be the means of their support, in all their distresses.

And may our Gracious Queen have a happy reign, and live to see good days, and that it may please thee O Lord to give her peace in her days.

And may she at the end of her days, be like unto the five wise virgins, with her lamp trimmed, and at her call go forth to meet the bridegroom, and there enter into the marriage supper of the Lamb, and there to behold his glory, and to drink of the rivers of love.

And that it may please thee O Lord, to bless and preserve all the Royal Family, and to keep them all from the subtilty, crafts, and assaults of sin and Satan, and finally at the last, bring them all to thine everlasting kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And that it may please thee Almighty God, to bless our great men, the Lords of the Council, and all the nobility who are put in authority, and have the rule over us, enrich them with thy heavenly grace, faith, love, and wisdom, so that they may act for the good of thy cause, Church and people, and that they may be fathers to the fatherless and distressed, and a support to the widows, for this is the will of God in his holy habitation. (Psalm lxiii. 5.) O that they may all rule by the love of Christ, so that the low order may bless them in the

name of the Lord whilst on earth, and at last praise them in the gates when they pass through into the celestial city. And that it may please thee Gracious God, to bless thy ministry servants with a double portion of thy Holy Spirit, so that they may truly, and with much power officiate in holy things, and that they may preach the Gospel of Christ to all nations, and that it may be to the conversion of many souls; and O that all the world may be profited, and blest, and edified thereby.

And may it please thee blessed Lord, to preserve and defend thy Church and people on earth, even all them that have a true desire to believe in thee, and to love thee, and to obey thee; and that they may all worship thee, Gracious Father, as their .supreme delight, and sanctify thee in all things, so that at the last may all the true Israel of God meet to ether to praise thee in glory everlasting, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

END OF THE TWENTY-FIRST BOOK.

BOOK TWENTY-SECOND.

The Trials of the Righteous.

In this Book we have the Trials of the Righteous, and their patience and resignation to the will of God, and also their deliverance by the power of his Grace, which is a great consolation to the tired soul, and blessed is the man that readeth this Book and pondereth in his heart, whose life doth correspond with those characters mentioned in this Book, for he shall receive the Cup of Salvation, and shall enter into the joys of his Lord.

We do know, and do feel that it is a blessed and a happy thing to be in the love and favour of that Supreme Being above, and it is said, That the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and that his ears are open unto their prayers. (Peter iii. 12.) But although it be so, yet on the other hand, this life is a warfare to the righteous; and there is great trials and travails for the sons of men, and this we know by our own experience, and by the word of God, as follows:-for we see

from the beginning how that our first parents were tried and attacked by the devil, and we also read of the trials of our blessed Saviour, and the sufferings that he went through to deliver us from the fall-for he was tried and tempted as we are, but yet without sin; see my little Book called The Sufferings of Christ. And again, many are the trials of the righteous, but if we pray, and wait patiently, the Lord will deliver us out of them all; for we see that how Abraham underwent and endured that severe trial in the offering up of his son, and by faith and patience and resignation to the will of God, he was delivered, that he might honour and glorify God: you have a full account of this in my Book of Faith and Trials. And we read again in another place how that good old Jacob was tried, and there every tender parent may see and feel something of the trial and trouble that he underwent at the loss of his son Joseph. Now, Joseph was a beloved son in the sight of his father Jacob, but his brethren hated him, because he was beloved of his father, and somewhat singular in goodness and in dreams to them; and it was in some of their minds to have slain him: but the Lord touched the heart of Reuben to spare his life; so his life was preserved; so his brethren did not kill him, but they sold him to the Ishmeelites, and the Ishmeelites brought him down to Egypt, and sold him to an Egyptian: and so afterwards it was fulfilled which was spoken of God uuto Abraham, that his seed should be a stranger in a land that was not theirs, and that they should serve them, and that they should afflict them four hundred years. (Gen. xv. 13.) And there we may see that poor Joseph like another child of God was tried and afflicted, and comforted in the land of Egypt, and you may see how he was tempted there in my Book of Temptation; but his brethren brought a false report of him to their father, and his father Jacob not knowing what was done, perceived that he was dead by his bloody coat which his brethren had dipped in blood, and brought it as a false pretence to their father, and their father knew it and said, It is my son's coat, an evil beast hath devoured him, Joseph is without doubt rent in peices; and Jacob rent his clothes, and put sack-cloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days, and all his sons, and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted, and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning; thus his father wept for him. (Gen. xxxvii. 33.) Now it appears that Jacob had but two sons by Rachel,
