ITEM NO. 44

Request: At page 1303 of the printed transcript (pt. 3) and elsewhere in the record appear requests for statements as to the result of the operation of the various branch lines controlled by the Northern Pacific Railroad Co.

Answer: These figures are shown on Exhibits A and B submitted herewith prepared by the assistant general auditor of the Northern Pacific Railway Co. from the records of the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. All of the branch lines except two are covered by Exhibit A. The operations under the lease of the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad and the operations of the line originally part of the St. Paul & Pacific and later the St. Paul & Northern Pacific partly under lease and partly under control through stock ownership are shown under Exhibit B. The figures on Exhibit A set forth first the total net earnings to and including June 30, 1887, by which time the main line was completed to Puget Sound. They also show net earnings for all subsequent years in which figures are available down to June 30, 1896. Exhibit B shows the earnings under the operation of the Lake Superior & Mississippi lease during the whole time it was in effect and the result of the operation of the line of the St. Paul & Pacific later comprised in the road of the St. Paul & Northern Pacific by years from the beginning to June 30, 1887. Reference to Exhibit A will show 12 branch lines in operation before June 30, 1887 of which 7 made a profit and 5 showed a deficit up to that date. The profits, however, exceeded the losses and the net result of the 12 branch lines was a profit for that period of $599,109.18. These roads and the others subsequently operated showed a net profit for the years named down to June 30, 1896 of $2,153,521.92. Reference to Exhibit B will show that for the period from May 1, 1872 to May 1, 1874 the net profit to the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. of its operations under the Lake Superior & Mississippi lease was $483,899.68. Exhibit B also shows a net profit from the operation by the Northern Pacific of the St. Paul & PacificSt. Paul & Northern Pacific line from July 1, 1877, to June 30, 1887, with a total net profit during these years of $3,295,515.78. The total net profit to June 30, 1887, of the branch-line operation shown on Exhibits A and B is, therefore $4,378,524.64.

The assistant general auditor who compiled these figures states that the results given are reached after deducting all rentals and bond interest chargeable against the properties.

(The above is submitted by James B. Kerr, counsel for Northern Pacific Railway Co.)
