thousand two hundred ninety eight pounds, for levy-money for recruiting the horses of the English horfe and dragoons, which were killed and died of the common diftemper in the Low Countries, between the first day of May, one thousand feven hundred and fix, and the one and thirtieth day of December following; and for or towards the making good a fum not exceeding fixteen thousand fifty five pounds, twelve fhillings and fix pence, for defraying her Majefty's fhare of the levy-money for recruiting the horfes of the Danish troops in the pay of England and Holland, that were loft in the fame manner between the first day of January, one thousand feven hundred and five, and the laft day of October, one thousand feven hundred and fix; and for or towards the making good a fum not exceeding one thoufand feven hundred seventy five pounds, for the like lofs fuftained by the troops of Hanover in her Majesty's pay during the last campaign in Flanders; and for fatisfying and difcharging the fum of three hundred ninety eight thousand eighty five pounds ten fhillings, mentioned in the fifteenth article of the treaty of union between England and Scotland, confirmed by acts of parliament Equivalent in both kingdoms, being the equivalent to be answered by the money. faid article to Scotland, for fuch cuftoms and excife which Scotland is to be charged with, and will be applicable to the debts of England; and for enabling her Majefty to make a recompence Recompence not exceeding two thousand fix hundred forty one pounds, to the to the city of mayor, aldermen, and citizens of the city of Carlisle, for fuch tolls as they are to be deprived of by the fixth article of the faid treaty of union: which recompence is to go to and for the fame ufes and purposes to which the faid tolls ought to have been applied; and for enabling her Majesty to make a recompence, not exceeding five thousand pounds, to Jofeph Mufgrave, Thomas Mufgrave, and George Mufgrave, fons of Sir Chriftopher Mufgrave baronet, deceafed, in full discharge of all tolls in Westmoreland and Cumberland, that were granted to Sir Philip Mufgrave baronet, by King Charles the Second, and which are fpecified in the grants of King James the Second, and King Wil liam the Third, to the late Sir Chriftopher Mufgrave; and for enabling her Majefty to apply what may be convenient for the better fecuring the islands of Nevis and St.Chriftophers, and fupplying them with neceffaries in order to a re-fettlement; and to no other uses, intents, or purposes whatsoever.

CAP. XXVIII.

An act for raising the militia for the year one thousand feven hundred and feven, notwithstanding the month's pay formerly advanced be not repaid; and for an account to be made of trophy money.

CAP. XXIX.

An act for cafe of her Majefty's fubjects in relation to the duties upon falt, and for making the like allowances upon the exportation of white herrings, flesh, oatmeal, and grain called beer, alias bigg, as are to be made upon exportation of the like from Scotland.

HEREAS by the articles of union between the kingdoms

W England and Scotland, which are agreed upon and con

firmed by an act of this prefent parliament, there are certain conceffions made for the advantage of her Majefty's fubjects of that part of Great Britain called Scotland, in matters relating to the duties upon falt, and other goods and merchandizes, as are herein after-mentioned, whereby her Majesty's fubjects in England, trading in falt and other the commodities herein after particularly expreffed, will be liable to great difadvantages, unless provifion be likewife made for their eafe in the faid trade: we your Majefty's most dutiful and loyal suban equality of jects the commons, in parliament affembled, being defirous that there may be as great an equality of trade as is poffible among all your Majesty's fubjects, do befeech your Majefty that it may be enacted, and be it enacted by the Queen's most excellent majesty, by and with the advice and confent of the lords fpiritual and temporal, and commons, in parliament affembled, Foreign falt and by the authority of the fame, That all foreign falt that shall imported after be imported into the kingdom of England, dominion of Wales, to be weighed, or town of Berwick upon Tweed, from and after the first day of cella: ed, and May, one thousand feven hundred and feven, fhall, upon the locked up. landing thereof, be weighed, cellared, and locked up in the prefence of an officer for the duties on falt, under the cuftody of the merchant or importer (who is to be at the charge of the cellarage or ftore-house) and fuch officer as the commiffioners for the duties on falt for the time being, thall appoint, in the port or place where the fame fhall be fo imported and landed; and that it hall and may be lawful to and for the merchant or importer of the said falt, from time to time, in the presence of an quantity, &c. officer for the duties on falt, and by warrant or permit, under forty bufhels, fuch officer's hand and feal, to have what quantity thereof his paying duty in occafions may require, not under a weigh or forty bushels at a fix months. time, giving fecurity for the duty of what quantity he receives, payable in fix months time after the delivery of any fuch falt; and in cafe fuch merchant or importer fhall pay ready money upon the delivery of the falt, he fhall have after the rate of ten pounds per centum per annum out of the said duties abated him.

III. And whereas falt carried coaftwife is or may be liable to wafte, Allowances be it enacted by the authority aforefaid, That any merchant or person who, from and after the said first day of May, one thoufand feven hundred and feven, fhall thip any English falt, or rock falt, to be carried coaftwife, (viz.) from one port of England or Wales, or the port of Berwick upon Tweed, to any port of England or Wales, or Berwick upon Tweed, the duties having been paid, or fecured to be paid, according to former laws, fhall have an allowance made to him, after the rate of three bushels for every forty bushels of English white falt, and after the rate of one bushel and an half for every forty bushels of English rock falt fo shipped to be carried coaftwife, and proportionably for a This clause greater or lefs quantity, in confideration of the ordinary wafte explained by in the carriage thereof, which allowance shall be made but once for the fame falt, although fuch falt be carried from several ports coaftwife, as aforefaid, and the proper officer of the port, where fuch falt or rock falt fhall be first shipped to be carried coaftwife, fhall not only exprefs the faid allowance on the coaft cocquet or tranfire for the fame, but also give gratis to the faid merchant, or other perfon there fhipping the fame, a certificate under hand and feal, of the number of bushels of falt fo fhipped, and how much the allowance hereby directed to be made at the rates aforefaid doth amount to, which certificate being produced to the officer who first received the duties of the faid falt, or took security for the fame, the officer laft-mention- 12 months allowed for ed fhall repay fo much money as he received for duties of the payment of faid falt, or rock falt, as is to be allowed for wafte, as aforefaid; duties on rock and if the duties thereof shall not then have been paid in mo- falt.

ney, then the faid officer fhall discount the faid allowance for wafte on the said security.

V. And it is hereby enacted, That in all cafes where, by the former laws relating to the duties on falt, the time for payment of the duties on rock falt is appointed to be nine months, there shall be twelve months time allowed, instead of the faid nine months; and where the time for payment of the duties on other English falt is by the faid former laws appointed to fix months, there shall be nine months time allowed instead of the faid fix months; and the securities and discounts for prompt payment, after the faid firft day of May next, shall be regulated accordingly.

VI. And be it further enacted by the authority aforefaid, for white her- That for all white herrings, which fhall, from and after the said rings export- firft day of May, one thousand feven hundred and feven, be exported from any port or place in the kingdom of England, dominion of Wales, or town of Berwick upon Tweed, to parts beyond the feas, by any perfon or perfons whatsoever, there fhall be the like allowances as are to be made upon the exportation of white herrings from Scotland, to be paid by the officer appointed to collect the duties upon falt in the fame port from whence any fuch herrings fhall be exported, within thirty days after a demand thereof, on a debenture to be prepared by the collector of the customs where fuch herrings fhall be entred out for exportation, and verified by the perfon executing the office of fearcher in fuch port, as to the quantity of herrings actually fhipped, and that the fame were well cured, and merchantable, and full packed, and that the oath of the exporter or agent be be first taken before the principal officers of the faid port, before the debenture be allowed, who are hereby required and impowered to give the faid oath, That the herrings in fuch debenture mentioned were cured with falt, for which the duties had been paid, and not drawn back, and that the fame is really exported to parts beyond the feas, and not relanded or intended to be relanded in England, Wales, or Berwick upon Tweed; for which debenture no fee or reward shall be taken; and in cafe the officer hereby directed to pay fuch debenture, shall not have fufficient money in his hands to pay the fame, then upon certificate thereof by him made (which certificate he is hereby required to give the party gratis) the principal commiffioners for managing her Majefty's revenue of excife upon falt for the time being, fhall be chargeable with the said payment, to be made in course out of the first money in their hands arifing out of the duties upon falt; and that it fhall and may be lawful for the officers of the faid duties on falt, in the feveral and refpective ports of the kingdom of England, dominion of Wales, and town of Berwick upon Tweed, upon the exportation of any herrings, as aforefaid, and before the fame fhall be laid on board for exExported and portation, to mark any cafk, barrel, or other veffel, wherein relanded, for- any fuch herrings fhall be exported, to the intent it may be feited, and known that fuch herrings have been exported, and allowances
