In this third volume which consists chiefly of Articles relating to Elasticity and Heat, I have not found it convenient to follow the chronological order of Vols. I. and II. A concluding volume of the present series will I hope contain, in chronological order, all that remain of my Mathematical and Physical Papers. I take this opportunity of expressing my thanks to Messrs Adam and Charles Black, for their kindness in permitting the Articles on Elasticity and Heat from the Encyclopædia Britannica, to be included in the present volume.
