Mr. Chilton presented a resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the commonwealth of Kentucky, requesting their Senators and Representatives in Congress to procure the passage of a law so to enlarge the franking privilege as to allow the adjutant general, major, and brigadier generals, to frank all militia communications directly to commandants of regiments.

Mr. Cage presented a petition of Anthony M. Perryman, postmaster at Holmesville, in the State of Mississippi, praying for an additional allowance of compensation, so as to enable him to employ a clerk in his office.

Mr. Ellsworth presented a petition of Joel W. White and Eleazer Pomeroy, of the State of Connecticut, praying compensation for extra services performed by them in the transportation of the United States mail on the route from Hartford, Connecticut, to Providence, in the State of Rhode Island.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Mr. Mason presented a petition of inhabitants of Southampton county, in the State of Virginia; which petition was referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Ordered, That the petition of inhabitants of Montgomery, Herkimer, &c. in the State of New York, presented February 25, 1833, be again referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

Mr. Wilson presented a petition of Nicholas Madera, of Monongalia County, in the State of Virginia;

Mr. Tompkins presented a petition of Solomon Preuitt, of the State of Kentucky;

Mr. Vinton presented a petition of Josiah Simpson, of Meigs county, in the State of Ohio;

Mr. Elisha Whittlesey presented a petition of Nathaniel Coleman, of Ashtabula county, in the State of Ohio;

Mr. Murphy presented a petition of James Lafoy, of Washington county, in the State of Alabama;

Mr. Wardwell presented a petition of Peter Doxtator, of Jefferson county, in the State of New York;

Mr. Wardwell presented a petition of Jacob Weaver, of the State of New York;

Mr. McVean presented a petition of John Soder, of Montgomery county, in the State of New York;

praying respectively that their names may be inscribed on the list of revolutionary pensioners of the United States.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

Mr. William B. Shepard presented a petition of Caroline E. Clitherall, of the State of North Carolina, widow of Doctor George C. Clitherall, deceased, late a surgeon in the army of the United States, praying to be paid the amount which was due to her late husband for rent of quarters, fuel, and other emoluments to which he was entitled while serving in the capacity aforesaid; which petition was referred to the Committee on Military Affairs.

Mr. Lytle presented a petition of Samuel Borden, of the State of Ohio, an officer in the army in the late war with Great Britain, praying that bounty land may be granted to the officers of said army; which petition was referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Mr. Chinn presented a memorial of the Corporation of Georgetown, in the District of Columbia, praying Congress to provide for the construction of a bridge across the Potomac river above said town, in connexion with the aqueduct now constructing for the Alexandria canal.

Mr. Richard M. Johnson presented a petition of Elizabeth J. Wilson and Ann C. Wilson, of Alexandria, in the District of Columbia, praying, for reasons therein set forth, that a lien held by the United States on a lot of land in the said town of Alexandria may be surrendered up to them.

Mr. Lytle presented a petition of inhabitants of the town of Madison, in the county of Hamilton, in the State of Ohio, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Mr. Leavitt presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Harrison, in the State of Ohio, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Mr. Sloane presented a petition of inhabitants of the village of Cleaveland, in the State of Ohio, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Mr. Ellsworth presented petitions of inhabitants of the States of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Mr. Heman Allen presented a petition of inhabitants of the counties of Franklin and Grand Isle, in the State of Vermont, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Mr. Beardsley presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Oneida, and State of New York, praying for the abolition of slavery within the District of Columbia.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Wayne presented a petition of merchants of the city of Savannah, in the State of Georgia, praying that a building for a custom-house may be erected in said city.

Mr. Lytle presented a petition of Eliphalet Y. Sabine, of Eastport, in the State of Maine, praying for a remission of the duties on a quantity of iron recently imported by him, which, upon examination, was found to be damaged.

Mr. McLene presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Delaware, in the State of Ohio, praying for the improvement of the harbor of Sandusky bay, on Lake Erie.

Mr. Elisha Whittlesey presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Huron, in the State of Ohio, praying that a beacon light may be constructed at Cedar Point, on Sandusky bay.

Mr. Elisha Whittlesey presented another petition of inhabitants of the county of Huron, in the State of Ohio, praying that an appropriation may be made for the construction of a harbor at the mouth of Vermillion river, on Lake Erie.

Mr. Reed presented a petition of inhabitants of Wareham, in the State

of Massachusetts, praying for the construction of beacons and buoys at the head of Buzzard's bay, near the said town of Wareham.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Mr. Richard M. Johnson presented documents relative to a claim to a pension of John Saunders, of the State of Kentucky; which documents were referred to the Committee on Invalid Pensions.

Mr. Foster presented a petition of Samuel A. Bailey, of the State of Georgia, praying permission to locate a military land warrant for revolutionary services, on the public lands in Alabama or Mississippi, or that scrip may issue in lieu of said warrant which shall be received in payment for public lands in those States.

Mr. Richard M. Johnson presented a petition of sundry officers of the army of the United States in the late war with Great Britain, praying that grants of bounty land may be made to the officers of said army.

Mr. Pope presented a petition of sundry other officers of said army, also residing in the State of Kentucky, praying that grants of bounty land may be made to the officers of said army.

Mr. Vance presented a resolution adopted by the General Assembly of the State of Ohio, soliciting of Congress the passage of an act granting a quantity of land to aid in constructing the Mad river and Lake Erie railroad.

Mr. Crane presented a petition of inhabitants of the town of Perrysburg, in the county of Wood, in the State of Ohio, praying that those persons who have purchased out-lots in said town at a sale thereof for State taxes, may have granted to them a right of pre-emption in the purchase thereof from the United States, as the sale for taxes is believed to be invalid.

Mr. McCarty presented a petition of Stephen Theodore Badin, a Roman Catholic missionary, residing among the Pottawatamie Indians, praying that the section of land on which he has made his improvements may be granted to him, or that he may have a right of pre-emption in the purchase of said land.

Mr. McCarty presented a memorial of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, praying for a grant of public land to aid said State in constructing a canal or railroad from Lawrenceburg to the Erie and Wabash canal, in the direction of the southern bend of the river St. Joseph's.

Mr. Edward D. White presented a petition of Henry Stoker, of the parish of Natchitoches, in the State of Louisiana, praying that his title to a certain tract of land, in the said State, may be confirmed, or that other lands may be granted him in lieu thereof.

Mr. Ewing presented a petition of Jacob Lefevre, of the State of Indiana, praying that the money paid by him for a tract of public land may be refunded, as he has been deprived of the land by the dishonest conduct of the receiver of the land office.

Mr. Ewing also presented a petition of the Board of Trustees of the congressional township in the county of Knox, in the State of Indiana, praying that measures may be adopted for the support of a free school within said township.

Mr. Duncan presented a petition of James Trimble, of the State of

Illinois, praying permission to change a section of land granted to him as.. bounty land for his services as a soldier in the late war, the tract heretofore granted being unfit for cultivation.

Mr. Duncan presented a petition of sundry officers of the army in the late war with Great Britain, praying that grants of bounty land may be made to the officers of said army.

Mr. Casey presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Clarke, in the State of Illinois, praying Congress to grant a quantity of public land to aid in the construction of a railroad leading from a suitable point on the Chicago road to Vincennes, in Indiana.

Mr. Casey presented a petition of Abijah Fuller, of the State of Illinois, praying that a tract of good land may be granted to him in lieu of the tract granted to him as bounty land for his services as a soldier in the army of the late war, which tract is unfit for cultivation.

Mr. Clay presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Jackson, in the State of Alabama, on behalf of a certain William Gunn, of said county, praying that the title of said Gunn to a certain tract of land may be confirmed.

Mr. Murphy presented a petition of Andrew Henshaw, of the State of Alabama, praying payment of an account due him for surveying a portion of the public land.

Mr. Murphy presented a memorial of the Moulton Railroad Company, in the State of Alabama, praying that a section of public land, on each side of the route laid down for said road, may be granted to the company on equitable terms.

Mr. Lucius Lyon presented a memorial of inhabitants of the county of Oakland, in the Territory of Michigan, praying the grant of a township of land to endow a seminary of learning in said county.

Mr. Sevier presented a petition of William Stevenson, of the Territory of Arkansas, praying compensation for the loss of his right of preemption in the purchase of a tract of public land, and his improvements thereon; which land has been located for territorial purposes under a law of the United States.

Mr. Joseph M. White presented a memorial of the trustees of the Pensacola academy, in the Territory of Florida, praying that certain lots in the city of Pensacola, belonging to the United States, may be granted to said academy, to aid in the erection of a suitable building.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Mr. Wilson presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Brooke, in the State of Virginia, praying that a national road may be constructed from Washington, in Pennsylvania, to a suitable point onLake Erie.

Mr. Beaty presented a petition of inhabitants of the States of Kentucky and Tennessee, praying that an appropriation may be made for the improvement of the navigation of the Cumberland river.

Mr. Pope presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Kentucky, praying Congress to direct the purchase of the capital stock in the Louisville and Portland canal, and that the said canal may be made free of toll. Mr. Bell, of Ohio, presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Ohio, praying Congress to authorize a subscription of additional stock in

the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, to be employed in the construction of the western section of said canal.

Mr. Bell, of Ohio, presented a memorial of a convention of citizens of the States of Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, praying Congress to aid in the construction of a bridge across the river Ohio, at or near Wheeling.

Mr. Sloane presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Ohio, residing in Cleaveland and its vicinity, on Lake Erie, praying Congress to provide for the construction of a ship canal around the falls of Niagara.

Mr. Ewing presented a memorial of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, concerning the lands granted to aid in the construction of the Wabash and Erie canals, being a copy of the memorial heretofore presented from the said Assembly upon the same subject.

Mr. Lucius Lyon presented a petition of inhabitants of the Territory of Michigan, praying that a road may be constructed from Fort Gratiot, by Le Pierre and Grand river, to intersect the Detroit and Chicago road.

Mr. Joseph M. White presented a petition of inhabitants of the counties of Gadsden and Jackson, in the Territory of Florida, praying that an appropriation may be made for the construction of a road through the Appalachicola swamp.

Mr. John Quincy Adams presented a memorial of inhabitants of the State of New York, praying Congress to provide for the construction of a ship canal around the falls of Niagara.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Roads and Canals.

On motion of Mr. Cage,

Ordered, That the report of the Postmaster General, dated 14th December, 1827, and communicated to the House of Representatives on the 17th day of the same month, in relation to the obstructions that exist on the great mail route from Natchez to New Orleans, by the Homochitto swamp, and the probable expense of removing them, be feferred to the Committee on Roads and Canals.

On motion of Mr. Casey,

Ordered, That the petition of William D. Brown, presented February 7, 1831, be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Mr. Beaty presented a petition of Martha McKee, sole devisee of Samuel McKee, late of the State of Kentucky, deceased, setting forth that her late husband was the owner of a tract of military bounty land lying between Ludlow and Roberts's lines, in the State of Ohio, which land has been sold by the United States, and praying to be paid the value thereof.

Mr. Richard M. Johnson presented a petition of Lydia Taylor, of the State of Kentucky, widow of William Taylor, who was killed while a soldier in the army in the late war, praying to be allowed and paid the five years' half pay of her said husband, to which she conceives herself entitled by reason of his death in the service.

Mr. Lea, of Tennessee, presented a petition of Peter Rambo, praying that the amount of money taken from him by the British troops at Fort Niagara, upon the surrender of that fort, may be refunded to him.

Mr. Lane, Mr. Kinnard, and Mr. Ewing severally presented memorials of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, praying that rangers
