Mr. Chambers presented a copy of the proceedings of citizens of the town of Quincy, in the county of Franklin, in the State of Pennsylvania, complaining of the distress and embarrassments in trade under which they are laboring, and praying, as the best remedy therefor, that the deposite of the public funds may be restored to the Bank of the United States. Mr. Parker presented a memorial of inhabitants of Rahway and Woodbridge, in New Jersey, praying Congress to charter a National Bank, with ample capital, and with the right to establish branches with the consent of States.

Mr. Denny presented a copy of the proceedings of a very large meeting of the citizens of Pittsburg, and its vicinity, in the State of Pennsylvania, disapproving of the course pursued by the Executive Government towards the Bank of the United States, and asking a restoration of the public deposites to said Bank.

Mr. Sutherland presented a petition of G. T. Beyer, of the city of Philadelphia, praying to be indemnified for merchandise lost by him at the capture of St. Mary's, in Georgia, by the British forces in the late war.

Mr. Sutherland presented a memorial of inhabitants of the State of Pennsylvania, praying that the charter of the Bank of the United States may not be renewed, and that the public deposites may not be restored to said Bank.

Mr. Sutherland presented a memorial of farmers, merchants, mechanics, manufacturers, traders, and other citizens of the district of Southwark, and township of Moyamensing, part of the first congressional district of Pennsylvania, setting forth that they are in the midst of unexampled suffering and pecuniary distress, and praying that the deposite of the public funds may be restored to the Bank of the United States, as the means of affording relief.

Mr. Watmough presented a copy of the proceedings of a meeting of the citizens of the districts of Spring Garden and Penn Township, (part of the city of Philadelphia,) held on the 4th of February instant, disapproving the conduct of the Executive Government towards the Bank of the United States, and soliciting Congress to order the deposite of the public funds to be restored to the Bank of the United States.

Mr. Barber presented a memorial of citizens of Norwich, in the State of Connecticut, setting forth that the great and increasing distress which extends throughout the country has arisen mainly from the removal of the public deposites from the Bank of the United States, and praying that the deposites may be restored to said Bank.

Mr. Horace Everett presented a petition of Return B. Brown, of the State of Vermont, praying to be released from the effects of a judgment recovered against him at the suit of the United States, for reasons set forth in his petition.

Mr. Edward D. White presented a petition of James H. Caldwell, setting forth that a charter has been granted to him by the General Assembly of the State of Louisana, for the purpose of lighting the city of New Orleans with gas, and praying to be permitted to import the necessary pipes and apparatus free of duty.

Ordered, That the petition of John F. Ohl, presented February 22, 1827, be referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.

Mr. Clayton presented a petition of Jacob R. Brooks and Thomas O. Ferrall, of Georgia, setting forth that the bounty land granted them as soldiers in the army in the late war with Great Britain, and lying in the State of Illinois, has been sold, under the laws of that State, to raise the taxes due thereon; and praying that other lands, lying in the State of Alabama, may be granted them in lieu of the lands so sold.

Mr. Cage presented a petition of the President and Directors of the West Feliciana Railroad Company, praying that all the vacant and unsold public land lying within the parish of West Feliciana, in Louisiana, and within the county of Wilkinson, in Mississippi, may be granted to said company, to aid in the construction of their road.

Mr. Ashley presented a petition of Cecile Comparé, a half blood of the Kanzas tribe of Indians, now the wife of Hyacinthe Lecomte, of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, praying for a grant of the land to which she is entitled under the sixth article of the treaty of the 3d of June, 1825, with the said Indians.

Mr. Bull presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Missouri, praying that settlers on public lands may have granted to them the right of pre-emption in the purchase of the lands on which they may have settled.

Mr. Sevier presented a petition of inhabitants of the Territory of Arkansas, praying that a donation of public land may be made to every person who will become an actual settler thereon.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Ordered, That the petition of George Davenport, presented January 16, 1832, be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

On motion of Mr. White, of Florida,

Ordered, That the petition of the General Assembly of the Territory of Florida, relative to pre-emption rights, presented February 11, 1833, be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

On motion of Mr. White of Florida,

Ordered, That the petition of the Mayor and Aldermen of the city of St. Augustine, in the Territory of Florida, for a grant of certain public lots in said city, presented March 15, 1830, be referred to the Committee on the Public Lands.

Mr. Milligan presented a petition of inhabitants of the town of Wilmington, in the State of Delaware, praying that twenty thousand dollars may be appropriated to improve the navigation of Christiana river, in said State, and to build a light-house at the mouth thereof.

Mr. Heath presented a petition of merchants and other inhabitants of the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, praying that a marine hospital may be established in said city.

Mr. Wise presented a petition of inhabitants of the counties of Northampton and Accomack, in the State of Virginia, praying that a

light-house may be erected on the south end of Hog island, and that buoys may be placed on the bar and channel of Matchapungo inlet.

Mr. Wise presented apetition of Horntown, in the county of Accomack, in the State of Virginia, praying that buoys may be placed in Chincoteague inlet.

Mr. Wise presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Accomack, in the State of Virginia, praying for the remission of a penalty imposed upon Jesse S. Kellam.

Mr. Wayne presented a petition of James Taylor, of Savannah, in the State of Georgia, setting forth that he became the purchaser of a French vessel wrecked on the coast of Georgia, and sold for salvage, and that the expense of repairs has equalled the cost of such a vessel when new; and praying that said vessel may be registered as an American built vessel.

Mr. Lyon presented a petition of inhabitants of the Territory of Michigan, praying that a light-house may be constructed at the mouth of Kalamazoo river; and, also, that a light-house may be constructed at the mouth of Grand river, both on Lake Erie, in the Territory of Michigan. Mr. Edward D. White presented a petition of the Pontchartrain Railroad Company, of the State of Louisiana, praying that an appropriation may be made for improving the harbor of Port Pontchartrain, on Lake Pontchartrain, and for building a light-house at the entrance of said harbor.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Ordered, That the petition of inhabitants of Lynn, in the State of Massachusetts, for a sea wall, presented January 7, 1833, be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Ordered, That the petition of inhabitants of the town of Marblehead, in the State of Massachusetts, for aid in improving the navigation of their harbor, presented January 9, 1832, be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

On motion of Mr. Joseph M. White,

Ordered, That the memorial of the General Assembly of the Territory of Florida, for the improvement of the navigation of the Suwannee river, presented February 11, 1833, be referred to the Committee on Com

merce.

Mr. Joseph M. White presented a petition of J. N. Simonton, praying that a light-house may be erected on Egmont island, near the harbor of Key West; which was referred to the Committee on Commerce.

Mr. McKim presented a memorial of the President and Directors of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, praying Congress to make a further subscription of the stock of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company, to be applied in the completion of the eastern section of the said canal.

Mr. Chinn presented a memorial of the President and Directors of the Alexandria Canal Company, of the District of Columbia, praying Congress to aid in the construction of said canal, by a subscription of stock or otherwise.

Mr. Chinn presented a memorial of the Board of Commissioners of the Washington City canal, praying the further aid of Congress in the completion of said canal.

The Speaker presented a memorial of the Legislative Council of the Territory of Michigan, praying that an appropriation may be made to improve the navigation over the flat or bar at the mouth of the strait between Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron; also, that an appropriation may be made for the removal of the bar across the mouth of Clinton river.

Mr. Amos Davis presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Kentucky, praying that a national road may be constructed from the direction of the city of Washington to the Western country, to run south of the Ohio river, and that the mouth of Big Sandy river and the city of Lexington be points in said road.

Mr. Pope presented memorials of inhabitants of the State of Kentucky, praying Congress to authorize the purchase of the capital stock of the Louisville and Portland canal, and that said canal may be made free of toll.

Mr. Sloane presented a petition of inhabitants of Buffalo, in the State of New York, and of inhabitants of Detroit, in the Territory of Michigan, praying that an appropriation may be made for the construction of a harbor at the mouth of Chagrin river, on Lake Erie.

Mr. Bell presented a petition of inhabitants of the State of Ohio, praying Congress to authorize an additional subscription to the capital stock of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, to be applied in the completion of the eastern section of said canal.

Mr. Lyon presented a petition of inhabitants of the county of Cass, in the Territory of Michigan, praying that the course of the Chicago road may be so changed as to run directly from Edwardsburg, through Berrien, to the mouth of the St. Joseph's river.

Mr. Lyon presented a memorial of a general convention of delegates, held at Jonesville, in the Territory of Michigan, on the 6th January, 1834, for the purpose of adopting measures preparatory to opening a communication between the waters of Lake Erie and Lake Michigan, by means of a railroad across the peninsula between those lakes, praying that a route for said railroad may be surveyed by United States engineers, and that Congress will make an appropriation to aid in its construction.

Mr. Lyon presented a memorial of the Legislative Council of the Territory of Michigan, a copy of the memorial of said council this day presented by the Speaker.

Ordered, That the said petitions and memorials be referred to the Committee on Roads and Canals.

Mr. Day presented a petition of Catharine Rasmussen, of the county of Cayuga, in the State of New York, widow of Andrew Rasmussen, deceased, who was killed while acting as a pilot in the naval service of the United States, praying to be allowed a pension from the naval pension

fund.

Mr. Burd presented a petition of William P. Piercy, a lieutenant in the navy of the United States, praying to be allowed and paid for certain extra services rendered by him under the orders of a superior officer.

Mr. Milligan presented a petition of Olivia W. Cannon, of the State of Delaware, widow of Joseph S. Cannon, deceased, late a midshipman in the navy of the United States, praying to be allowed a pension from the naval pension fund.

Mr. Wise presented a petition of Southey Parker, superintendent of the building occupied by the Navy Department, praying to be allowed an increase of pay.

Mr. Mason presented a petition of Foxhall A. Parker, a master commandant in the navy of the United States, praying to be indemnified for the expense incurred by him in 1828, while commanding the sloop of war "Fairfield," in conveying a public messenger, bearing despatches from the Government to the commanding officer of the Mediterranean squadron. Mr. Gorham presented a petition of Henry Bell, praying to be paid the portion, to which he is entitled as a seaman, of the prize money voted for the capture of an Algerine frigate in the year 1816.

Ordered, That the said petitions be referrred to the Committee on Naval Affairs.
