WORDBUILDING. CHANGE OF LETTERS.-RULE V.-e to i. Words ending in ble change the e into i, and also insert another i before the 1 when -ty is added. Many verbs ending in t, d, or r, change these letters to s before the termination -ive, -ion, and -ible. In the same manner add any of the above affixes that are applicable to the following words : WORDBUILDING. CHANGE OF LETTERS.-RULE VII.--The termination -tioǹ. 1. When the termination -tion is added to Verbs ending in -fy, it becomes -fication. 2. Verbs ending in ply make plication, when tion is added, as reply multiply multiplication EXERCISES. It is found in a few words of foreign origin, and at the end of words, because there is an aversion to c as a final letter. See Gen. Prin. p. 34. kal kali koran kraal kangaroo There are also a few words in which k is followed by n, where a vowel has probably been dropped :-- A curious illustration of the tendency to throw away the k whenever c can be substituted, is found in the compounds of words ending in ke. Again: the k is, as it were, recalled in composition, when there would be a liability to mispronunciation from its omission :— traffic Inimic mimicking ransack ransacking ransacker frolic trafficking trafficker frolicking Contrast with these the following words, where the k is not recalled before i, and the c in consequence takes the sound of s:catholic catholicism critic gallic RULE IX. criticism The past tense and abstract nouns of some Verbs end in ght, as buy, bought, &c. When the last Vowel is long, or unaccented, able is added. 2. To the following words add able, making the necessary changes in accordance with the preceding rules, as WORDBUILDING. The terminations -able and -ible. 3. The liquids 1, m, n, r, and s being semi-vowels, tend to lengthen the vowel preceding them; hence the following words take able, though accented on the last syllable. The following words are exceptions to this rule : When the last vowel is short, or accented, -ible is added.
