THE RETROSPECT OF PRACTICAL MEDICINE AND SURGERY, BEING A Half-Yearly Journal, CONTAINING A RETROSPECTIVE VIEW OF EVERY DISCOVERY AND PRACTICAL IMPROVEMENT IN THE MEDICAL SCIENCES. Edited by W. BRAITHWAITE, Surgeon to the Leeds General Eye and Ear Infirmary; and Lecturer on Midwifery, and the Diseases of Women and Children, in the Leeds School of Medicine. NO. X....JULY TO JANUARY. 1844. UNIFORM AMERICAN EDITION. NEW-YORK: PUBLISHED BY DANIEL ADEE, 107 FULTON-STREET. PREFACE TO THE AMERICAN EDITION. The publisher begs to return his thanks for the liberal and increasing patronage he has received from the profession, and takes no small pleasure in presenting them with the present No., which will be found not only the largest, but, he thinks, the most valuable one yet published. The additions made to the stock of Medical Knowledge during the last half year, are of no ordinary importance, as will readily be seen by a reference to the pages of the present No. The plan of collecting the experience of the most eminent practitioners and professors in the departments of Medicine and Surgery, and presenting the same, with their results, to the professional world once in every six months, in a concise form, is found to be one of very great and immediate benefit. For the greater convenience of our readers, a General Index to the first eight numbers of this work has been published, and is furnished gratuitously to all, and by a reference to its pages, it will be seen at a glance what discoveries or improvements have been made in any particular department during the years 1840 to 1844; a similar one will be issued at the close of every fourth year. The advantages of so doing to the reader are too apparent to need pointing out. With many wishes for the continued advancement of the profession in every department of Science, I have the honour to subscribe myself, Your grateful servant,' THE PUBLISHER. CONTENTS OF PART X. 3.
