A. H. BAILY & CO.'S NEW PUBLICATIONS.

MAXWELL'S LIFE OF WELLINGTON.

5

The following are a few of the many equally high eulogiums on this Work by the public Press :

"We have always greatly admired the style in which this interesting and really valuable work is brought before the public. Its numerous embellishments, useful for illustration and for reference, as well as ornamental to the eye, are of a higher order than is usual.

"Mr. Maxwell's work abounds with striking and characteristic anecdotes.

"Of the numerous Lives of the Duke of Wellington which have yet appeared, or are yet in the course of publication, Mr. Maxwell's is one that ought to be found in the library of every British officer."-The Naval and Military Gazette.

"We cannot but bear the highest testimony to the Life of the Duke of Wellington, by Mr. Maxwell, as being in all respects the best that has yet appeared, and the most worthy of the great subject which shines upon its page. The world had in some measure a guarantee for more than average excellence in the name of a writer well versed in military affairs, and whose previous productions are in no small degree associated with the glories of our country. We find the utmost care, labour, and research employed to aid his perfect knowledge of his subject; and the manly force, vigour, and simplicity of a style which is in no small degree

:

assimilated to the character of the great soldier himself.

"We are glad to find, too, that much original matter of interest is thrown into the work, and that it is always carefully stated upon sound authority. In regard to the general publication of the work, it could not be better than it is. Its typography is both careful and beautiful, and its illustrations are varied and excellent. We have maps and military plans to illustrate battles-admirable portraits, on steel, of the chief soldiers and statesmen who figure in the Wellington wars-woodcut head and tail pieces to the chapters, giving us army groupings or national costumes-and some splendid battle scenes by Cooper, exquisitely engraved and finished. In all departments, therefore, we must consider this publication as aiming at a perfection worthy of its illustrious subject. It is highly creditable to the Messrs. Baily to have published such a book, and their spirit in bringing it out must prove another incitement to Mr. Maxwell to pursue his most delightful, though difficult, task with the same eloquence, perseverance, and energy which he has displayed in that portion of it with which the public are already possessed of. He may thus make it our national Life of Wellington."-The Morning Post.

Under the above title, Messrs. A. H. BAILY & Co. have commenced
A SERIES OF PORTRAITS

OF

DERBY, OAKS, AND LEGER WINNERS,
And of other Horses celebrated for their performances.

For this purpose they have engaged the talents of Mr. J. F. HERRING, Sen. so well known as the celebrated Horse-painter. The likeness and execution of each is acknowledged to be perfection.

The size of the Portraits is much larger, and as Works of Art are much superior to any thing hitherto published.

No. 1.-BEE'S-WING. £1 1s.

"It is amongst the best, if it be not the very best, of the portraits of race-horses ever painted. It is a perfect representation of the celebrated and wonderful mare, Bee's-wing, perhaps the best that ever ran at Ascot, or, indeed, over any other course. Mr. Herring has given a characteristic portrait, full of identity and life; the picture, moreover, is full of pictorial merit as a work of art; the lights are admirably managed, the very horse-clothes, the litter, and the things which are to be seen in racing stables, are all introduced, and made subservient to general effect. The print will be an excellent addi

tion to portfolios and the walls of the rooms of sporting men, and men of taste."-Times.

"She is taken in her loose box, with her lively eye turned as it were on the visitor, who may be presumed to have popped in to take a peep at the pride of Northumbria. All the known points of this model of a mare are accurately presented, and her splendid rich bay delineated to perfection; her quarters are accurately pourtrayed, and she is placed, (that great difficulty) naturally, and therefore gracefully, on her legs."-Era.

No. 3. COTHERSTONE, WINNER OF THE DERBY, 1843. £1 1s.
No. 4.-POISON, WINNER OF THE OAKS, 1843. £1 1s.

"Altogether, we have never met with linear transcripts of the human countenance more correct in drawing, tasteful in arrangement, or thoroughly imbued with intellectuality, than those of M. DIEZ. The Engravings are of handsome size, and the price is so reasonable, as to bring them, either singly or in sets, within the reach of respectable classes generally."-Court Journal.

"DIEZ's Portraits of Illustrious Characters are drawn with singular beauty and distinctness of touch; his Portrait of Her Majesty is one of the most pleasing we have seen, and is an admirable likeness; nor is that of Prince Albert less accurate."-Sun.
