The present volume is, nevertheless, a distinct work, because it is confined exclusively to the architecture of the last three centuries; and it is no less novel than distinct, for, practically speaking, we may affirm that no one previously has treated of modern architecture as a whole, or has attempted to criticize its miscellaneous examples from a comprehensive point of view. We have had many works on particular buildings and styles in which their characteristics have been set forth with technical precision, but a survey of modern architecture, as a whole, has not been attempted before. The reason is that the subject is not only immense, but indefinite. It is not only difficult to say what modern architecture is and what it comprises, but it is especially puzzling to treat it in a scientific spirit, and to arrive at anything like a general inference in such an aggregate of confusion.'-Times.
