I. THE UNITED STATES. II. DOMINION OF CANADA.—III. SOUTH AMERICA, Etc.

BY ROBERT MACKENZIE,

Author of "The Nineteenth Century."

Harper's Popular Cyclopædia of United States History.

[ocr errors]

POPULAR CYCLOPÆDIA OF UNITED STATES HISTORY. From the Aboriginal Period to 1876. Containing
Brief Sketches of Important Events and Conspicuous Actors. By BENSON J. LOSSING, Author of "The Field-Book of
the Revolution," "Field-Book of the War of 1812," &c. Illustrated by Two Steel-plate Portraits and over 1000 Engrav-
ings. 2 vols., Royal 8vo, Cloth, $12 00.

There are multitudes of thoughtful men and women who wish to know
something about everything that has entered into our colonial and national
history, but have not the time to read the hundreds of volumes devoted to
some special class of facts, nor the means to procure them. This Cyclo-
pædia will enable them to gratify their laudable desire, clearly and intelli-
gently, by a moderate expenditure of time and money. *** It will be a
standard work for many years.-Albany Journal.

The work fills a hitherto vacant but important place, and should be
upon the book-shelves of every scholar in the country.-Boston Courier.
In these two volumes may be found, arranged in alphabetical order,
something about almost every notable person or event or object connected
with our national records.-Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

No writer has more eminent qualifications in this country than Mr.
Lossing for the preparation of a great national reference work, and a
careful study of these two volumes reveals the fact that he has consulted
every available source of information to make it complete and thoroughly
reliable in its character. *** For the reference library of the teacher and
school it seems to us to be almost indispensable.-Journal of Education,
Boston.

There is no other single work which will give the various information
offered here by Mr. Lossing. *** The amount of out-of-the-way informa-
tion furnished in the articles, and the number of current, or once current,
phrases explained, are really remarkable.-N. Y. Tribune.

*The facts are here,

A useful, careful, and comprehensive work.
and they are generally well arranged and easily accessible.-N. Y. World.
It is somewhat difficult to speak of this work in terms of moderation.
Everything is here which an intelligent mind would wish to know; each
historic event and character occupies its own appropriate niche, the sub-
ject matter is splendidly illustrated, and the whole forms a complete Amer-
ican history presented in a new and popular manner.-Chicago Journal.

It is excelled by no existing publication of its kind, and claims a prom-
inent place in every library, as well as among the few indispensable refer-
ence books which every professional man and student needs to have con-
tinually at hand.-Boston Transcript.

The work is a rich repository of knowledge, on things interesting to
all Americans, so arranged as to be easy of reference and to facilitate the
reader's quest for any required facts. The illustrations contribute to give
events a local habitation to our thoughts, and to enliven our interest in
distinguished men by permitting us to see them as they appeared in life.
Watchman, Boston.

If a person could afford to buy only this book, he would still be able
to obtain a very good knowledge of the leading events in the history of his
country, and of the people taking part in them.-Cincinnati Commercial.

The work is destined to become very popular. We know of noth-
ing more "handy" to the statesman or the student.- St. Louis Globe-
Democrat.
