OR,

HISTORICAL, ARCHITECTURAL, AND GRAPHICAL ILLUSTRATIONS

OF

THE ENGLISH CATHEDRAL CHURCHES.

For a liberal and learned review of this work, the reader is referred to the "Quarterly Review" for September, 1826; in which it is stated that "the task which Browne Willis left imperfect has been undertaken by Mr. Britton, who has contributed more than any other person to the illustration of our Architectural Antiquities." The" Theological Review," for December, 1825, in an able and discriminating Essay on Antient and Modern Architecture and Architects, says, "Unbiased by party, Mr. Britton has calmly examined the Cathedrals in succession, giving to each the emotions justly proportioned to it, and no more. The engravings of these volumes are for the most part of the highest order, and made from drawings by artists whose names stand in the first rank as architectural draftsmen."

NUMBER I.

OF

PICTURESQUE VIEWS

OF THE

CITIES AND CATHEDRALS OF ENGLAND.

TO BE ENGRAVED BY THE MOST EMINENT ARTISTS,

FROM DRAWINGS BY

G. F. ROBSON.

IN THE STYLE OF "COOKE'S COAST," ETC.

THE Work now announced for Publication will comprise a Series of Engraved Views of all the Cities of England, which will be represented from such stations, and under such effects, as to convey the most impressive and faithful portraits of the respective places. Mr. Robson has been several years preparing the Drawings, and has paid every attention to choose those points of View which are best calculated to characterize the principal local buildings and adjacent scenery of each city. The Cathedral, however, in every engraving constitutes the chief object; and it has been the aim of the artist to delineate its more elevated features with the greatest fidelity and truth. Pointing "heaven-ward" as the spires do, and raising their long and lofty roofs above the adjoining dwellings of man and the groves of nature, the English Cathedrals form most interesting subjects,-not only in their minute details, but also from various distant stations.

The Work will be comprised in Four Numbers, with Eight Prints in each. It will be printed on Medium and Imperial 4to. Papers to class with The Cathedral Antiquities. A small number will be worked with Proofs and Etchings, India Paper, Super-royal Folio, and Imperial 4to.

The following Engravers have executed some of the Plates, and others are in different stages of progress:-Varrall, Higham, Woolnoth, Jearons, Allen, Tombleson, Barber, Winkles, Smith, Roberts, Redaway, and Barrenger.

The Prices will be, Small Paper, Medium 4to. 17. 4s.-Imperial 4to. 21. 2s.— Imperial 4to. with Proofs and Etchings, India Paper, 4l. 4s.; and Proofs and Etchings, on Super-royal Folio, 61. 6s. per Number.

This Work will consist of upwards of Thirty Engravings, representing Views of the following Cities; some of which will be illustrated by two distinct Views:Bath, 2; Bristol, 1; Carlisle, 1; Chichester, 1; Chester, 1; Coventry, 1; Canterbury, 2; Durham, 2; Ely, 1; Exeter, 1; Gloucester, 1; Hereford, 1; Lichfield, 1; Lincoln, 2; London, 2; Norwich, 1; Oxford, 1; Peterborough, 1; Rochester, 1; Salisbury, 1; Wells, 1; Westminster, 1; Winchester, 1; Worcester, 1 ; and York, 2.
