The dumb speak wonders, and the lame Leap like the hart, and bless his name! 2. Thus doth th' eternal Spirit own

And seal the mission of the Son;
The Father vindicates his cause,
While he hangs bleeding on the cross.

3. He dies; the heav'ns in mourning stood;
He rises, and appears a God:

Behold the Lord ascending high,
No more to bleed, no more to die;
4. Hence and forever from my heart
I bid my doubts and fears depart;
And to those hands my soul resign,,
Which bear credentials so divine.

Hymn 42. L. M.

The Humiliation, Exaltation, and Triumphs of Christ.Phil. ii. 8, 9. Col. ii. 15%.

HE mighty frame of glorious grace,

"TH That brightest monument of praise

That e'er the God of Love design'd,
Employs and fills my lab'ring mind.
2. Begin, my soul, the heav'nly song,
A burden for an Angel's tongue;
When Gabriel sounds these awful things,,
He tunes and summons all his strings.

3. Proclaim inimitable love,

Jesus the Lord of worlds above,
Puts off the beams of bright array,
And veils the God in mortal clay.

4. He that distributes crowns and thrones
Hangs on a tree, and bleeds and groans;
The Prince of Life resigns his breath,
The King of Glory bows to death.

5. But see the wonders of his

power,

He triumphs in his dying hour,

And, while by Satan's rage he fell,

He dash'd the rising hopes of hell.

6. Thus were the hosts of death subdu'd,
And sin was drown'd in Jesus' blood:
Then he arose; he reigns above,
And conquers sinners by his love.
7. Who shall fulfil this boundless song?
The theme surmounts an Angel's tongue;
How low, how vain are mortal airs,
When Gabriel's nobler harp despairs;

1.

Joy

Hymn 43. c. M.

The Messiah's coming and kingdom.

OY to the world; the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her king;

Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
And heav'n and nature sing.

2. Joy to the earth; the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;

While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.

4. He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.

Let sinners tremble at his throne,
And saints be humbled there.

2. Jesus the Saviour reigns,

Let earth adore its Lord;

Bright cherubs his attendants stand,

And swift fulfil his word.

3. In Zion is his throne;

His honours are divine;

His church shall make his wonders knowny
For there his glories shine.

4. How holy is his name!

How terrible his praise!
Justice and truth and judgment join,
In all his works of grace.

Hymn 45. 1. M.

The glory of Christ, and power of his gospel.

[ocr errors]

OW be my heart inspir'd to sing
The glories of my Saviour King,
Jesus the Lord; how heavenly fair
His form! how bright his beauties are!

2. O'er all the sons of human race,
He shines with a superior grace,
Love from his lips divinely flows,
And blessings all his state compose.

3. Dress thee in arms, most mighty Lord!
Gird on the terror of thy sword,
In majesty and glory ride

With truth and meekness at thy side.
4. Thine anger, like a pointed dart,
Shall pierce the foes of stubborn heart;
Or words of mercy kind and sweet
Shall melt the rebels at thy feet.

5. Thy throne, O God, forever stands;
Grace is the sceptre in thy hands;
Thy laws and works are just and right;
Justice and grace are thy delight.

6. God, thine own God, has richly shed
His oil of gladness on thy head,
And with his sacred spirit bless'd
His first-born Son above the rest.

Hymn 46. P. M.

1. JOIN all the glorious names

Of wisdom, love, and pow'r,
That ever mortals knew,
That angels ever bore;
All are too mean
To speak his worth,
Too mean to set
My Saviour forth.

2. But Ọ what gentle terms,
What condescending ways
Doth our Redeemer use,
To teach his heav'nly grace!
Mine eyes with joy
And wonder see
What forms of love
He bears for me.

3. Array'd in mortal flesh,
He like an angel stands,
And holds the promises,
And pardons in his hands:
Commission'd from
His Father's throne,
To make his grace

To mortals known.

4. Great Prophet of my God,
My tongue would bless thy name;
By thee the joyful news

Of our salvation came;

The joyful news

Of sin forgiv❜n,

Of hell subdu'd

And peace with heav'n.

3. THE PASSION OF CHRIST. Hymn 47. c. M.

EHOLD the Saviour of mankind

Bail'd to the shameful tree;

How vast the love that him inclin'd
To bleed and die for thee!

2. Hark, how he groans! while nature shakes,
And earth's strong pillars bend!
The temple's veil in sunder breaks,
The solid marbles rend.

3. 'Tis done! the precious ransom's paid,
"Receive my soul!" he cries;

See, where he bows his sacred head!
He bows his head, and dies!

4. But soon he'll break death's envious chain, And in full glory shine;

O Lamb of God! was ever pain,
Was ever love like thine!

Hymn 48. P. M.

[From the German:]

Love divine! what hast thou done!
Jesus my Lord hath dy'd for me!

The Father's co-eternal Son,

Bore all my sins upon

the tree;

Th' atoning Lamb for me hath dy'd;
My Lord my Love, is crucify'd.

2. Behold him, all ye that pass by,

The bleeding Prince of life and peace!
Come see, ye worms, your Saviour die,
And say, was ever grief like his!
Come feel, with me, his blood apply'd;
My Lord, my Love, is crucify'd:
3. Is crucify'd for me and you,

To bring us rebels back to God:
