the circulating library. With a good assortment of general literature, it is rich in popular works on theology, and it aims to meet the need of the industries of this community, for such books on chemistry, mechanical science, and the arts of design, as are especially useful in a great manufacturing centre. The institution cannot afford to spend much, year after year, in costly collections of engravings, or in single works of painting and sculpture. But in this important department, we have been favored by generous friends, from time to time, as during the past year, with very valuable gifts. Our readingroom is supplied with the best periodical literature of the day, in the English language. With these advantages, offered to all at so moderate expense, and with the generous principles of management which will continue to guide our officers, the Athenæum will still be, as it has been, one of the chief agents in ensuring for this community a gain in intellectual and æsthetic culture, which shall bear some proportion to its material thrift.
