Monatliche Nachweise über den auswärtigen Handel Deutschlands, Ergänzungsheft I, 1933 and 1938. The data are exclusive of trade in gold and silver bullion and specie, except that for the years 1937 and 1938, trade in silver is included. Figures for imports are reported as imports for consumption from "country of origin," and those for exports are reported as German products to "country of final destination." In the German trade returns, the reichsmark figures for imports are c. i. f. values at point of entry, and those for exports are f. o. b. values at point of shipment.

Külkereskedelmi Forgalma. The data are exclusive of trade in gold and silver bullion and specie. Figures for imports are reported as imports for consumption from "country of origin," and those for exports are reported as exports of national and nationalized products to "country of destination." In the Hun garian trade returns, pengö figures for imports are declared c. i. f. values at Hungarian frontier, and those for exports are declared f. o. b. values at Hungarian frontier.

The rates of exchange shown were used in converting into reichsmarks the pengö values as given in the Hungarian trade returns. For the years 1929-37, the rates of exchange given are the annual average value of the Hungarian pengö as reported in Statistisches Jahrbuch für das Deutsche Reich, 1932 and 1938. The official rate of exchange provided for in the German-Hungarian clearing agreement of 1932 was 136.2 pengö for 100 reichsmarks, or 73.42 reichsmarks per 100 pengö. The practice in Hungary was to charge importers premiums for their foreign-currency requirements and also to pay exporters premiums on the foreign currency proceeds of their sales. These premiums were not uniform and in particular were higher on free currencies than on clearing marks and other controlled currencies. Premiums also varied depending on the imports for which the foreign currency was to be used or the exports from which it was derived. In 1937, for the principal commodities exchanged between Germany and Hungary, apparently the premium was 191⁄2 percent. Presumably it was for this reason that the pengö-reichsmark rate for 1937 is given in the Statistisches Jahrbuch für das Deutsche Reich as 61.44 reichsmarks per 100 pengö. Unofficial information indicates that in 1938 the most common premium charged and paid continued to be 191⁄2 percent. The 1938 rate is the annual average rate as reported in Vierteljahrshefte zur Statistik des Deutschen Reichs, 48. Jahrgang, 1939, Erstes Heft.

Effective Mar. 1, 1935, the Saar Territory became a part of Germany proper. However, the German foreign-trade statistics, beginning February 18, 1935, cover the foreign trade of the German Reich thus expanded.

*For similar statistics of Germany's trade with Rumania, see tables 19 and 20, pp. 194, 195.

TABLE 44.-Trade of Germany with GREECE, 1929-38
[Value in millions of reichsmarks]

[blocks in formation]

Monatliche Nachweise über den auswärtigen Handel Deutschlands, Ergänzungsheft I, 1933 and 1938. The data are exclusive of trade in gold and silver bullion and specie, except that for the years 1937 and 1938, trade in silver is included. Figures for imports are reported as imports for consumption from "country of origin," and those for exports are reported as German products to "country of final destination." Until 1932, the exports as shown include deliveries in kind on account of reparations: thereafter, no such deliveries or other payments were made on account of reparations. In the German trade returns, the reichsmark figures for imports are c. i. f. values at point of entry, and those for exports are f. o. b. values at point of shipment.

Statistique du Commerce de la Grèce avec les Pays Etrangers and Bulletin Mensuel du Commerce Spécial de la Grèce avec les Pays Etrangers. The data are inclusive of trade in gold and silver bullion and specie. Figures for imports are reported as imports for consumption from "country of origin," and those for exports are reported as exports of Greek products to "country of final destination." In the Greek trade returns, the drachma figures for imports are c. i. f. values at Greek port or frontier, exclusive of Greek duty or other inland charges, and those for exports are f. o. b. values at Greek port or frontier.

The rates of exchange shown were used in converting into reichsmarks the drachma values as given in the Greek trade returns. For the years 1929-37, the rates of exchange given are the annual average value of the Greek drachma as reported in Statistisches Jahrbuch für das Deutsche Reich, 1932 and 1938; the 1938 rate is the annual average rate computed from the monthly averages as reported in the July 1938 and January 1939 issues of the Recueil de Statistique de l'Institut International du Commerce.

Effective Mar. 1, 1935, the Saar Territory became a part of Germany proper. However, the German foreign-trade statistics, beginning Feb. 18, 1935, cover the foreign trade of the German Reich thus expanded.
