But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead. iv. 10. Bleffed be God - which, according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the refurrection of Jefus Chrift from the dead; to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away; reserved in Heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God, through faith unto falvation; ready to be revealed in the last time. See y. 13. above in fect. iv. 2 Pet. iii. 13. Nevertheless we, according to his promife, look for new Heavens, and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteoufnefs. 1 John iii. 2. fee in fect. ix. above. y. . 3. every man that bath this hope in him (of a refurrection) purifieth himfelf, even as he is pure. XII. The wicked will not be punished till the refurrection.

Matt. vii. 22, 23. Many will fay to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophefied in thy name? and then will I profefs unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. x. 15. it fhall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah, in the day of judgement, than for that city. Add xi. 22. xii. 36.

Whofoever therefore fhall be afhamed of me, and of my words; - of him alfo fhall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels. Luke x. 12.-it fhall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. See John v. 28, 29. in fect. viii. John xii. 48. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. Rom. ii. 5, 6. -But after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up unto thy felf wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; who will render to every man according to his deeds. 2 Theff. i. 7, 8, 9. When the Lord Jefus fhall be revealed from Heaven in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God; fhall be punished with everlasting destruction, from the prefence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 Pet. ii. 9. The Lord knoweth how to reserve the unjust unto the day of judg ment to be punished. iii. 7. the Heavens and the earth which are now, by the fame word are kept in ftore; referved unto fire against the day of judgment, and perdition of ungodly men. Jude 14, 15. Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thoufands of his faints; to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them, of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard fpeeches,

which ungodly finners have spoken against him. Rev. i. 7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him; and they also which pierced him and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. vi. 16, 17. And they said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that fitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to ftand?

XIII. All this plainly fhews, that the Scripture, in speaking of the connection between our prefent and future being, doth not take into the account our intermediate flate in death; no more than we, in defcribing the course of any man's actions, take in the time he fleeps.

Therefore the Scriptures (to be consistent with themselves) muft affirm an immediate connection between death and judgement. Heb. ix. 27.

It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement. See 2 Cor. v. 6, 8. in Objections.

XIV. For this reafon the Scriptures reprefent the coming of Chrift as near at hand.

Rom. xiii. 12. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Phil. iv. 5. the Lord is at hand. Jam. v. 8.-the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 9.-the judge ftandeth before the door. Rev. xxii.

XV. Also that be, his day, will come fuddenly, as a snare, a thief, upon all the world; and we are cautioned to watch, and be faber, that it furprize us not unprepared.

Luke xii. 40. Be ye therefore ready also; for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not. xxi. take heed to yourselves, lest 34. at any time your hearts be overcharged with furfeiting and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and fo that day come upon you unawares. 35.-for as a fnare fhall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36. For yourselves know perfectly, that the day of the Lord fo cometh as a thief in the night. 6. — Therefore let us not fleep as do others; but let us watch, and be fober. 2 Pet. iii. 10. the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. -12 looking for and hafting unto the day of the Lord.
