Ὣς ἔφατ ̓ εὐχόμενος· τοῦ δ ̓ ἔκλυε Φοῖβος Απόλλων·
βῆ δὲ κατ' Οὐλύμποιο καρήνων χωόμενος κῆρ,
τόξ ̓ ὤμοισιν ἔχων ἀμφηρεφέα τε φαρέτρην.
ἔκλαγξαν δ ̓ ἄρ ̓ ὀϊστοὶ ἐπ ὤμων χωομένοιο,
αὐτοῦ κινηθέντος. ὁ δ ̓ ἤτε νυκτὶ ἐοικώς.
ἕζετ ̓ ἔπειτ ̓ ἀπάνευθε νεῶν, μετὰ δ' ἰὸν ἕηκε·
δεινὴ δὲ κλαγγὴ γένετ' ἀργυρέοιο βιοῖο.
οὐρῆας μὲν πρῶτον ἐπῴχετο καὶ κύνας ἀργοὺς,
αὐτὰρ ἔπειτ ̓ αὐτοῖσι βέλος ἐχεπευκὲς ἐφιεὶς
βάλλ ̓· αἰεὶ δὲ πυραὶ νεκύων καίοντο θαμειαί.
Εννῆμαρ μὲν ἀνὰ στρατὸν ᾤχετο κῆλα θεοῖο,
τῇ δεκάτῃ δ ̓ ἀγορήνδε καλέσσατο λαὸν Ἀχιλλεύς·
τῷ γὰρ ἐπὶ φρεσὶ θῆκε θεὰ λευκώλενος Ηρη
κήδετο γὰρ Δαναῶν, ὅτι ῥα θνήσκοντας ὁρᾶτο.
οἱ δ ̓ ἐπεὶ οὖν ἤγερθεν ὁμηγερέες τ ̓ ἐγένοντο,
τοῖσι δ' ἀνισταμενος μετέφη πόδας ὠκὺς ̓Αχιλλεύς·
“ Ἀτρείδη, νῦν ἄμμε παλιμπλαγχθέντας δίω ἂψ ἀπονοστήσειν, εἴ κεν θάνατόν γε φύγοιμεν, εἰ δὴ ὁμοῦ πόλεμός τε δαμᾷ καὶ λοιμὸς Αχαιούς. ἀλλ ̓ ἄγε δή τινα μάντιν ἐρείομεν, ἢ ἱερῆα,
ἢ καὶ ὀνειροπόλον—καὶ γάρ τ ̓ ὄναρ ἐκ Διός ἐστιν
ὅς κ' εἴποι ὅ τι τόσσον ἐχώσατο Φοῖβος Απόλλων,
εἴτ ̓ ἄρ ̓ ὅγ' εὐχωλῆς ἐπιμέμφεται εἴθ ̓ ἑκατόμβης,
αἴ κέν πως ἀρνῶν κνίσσης αἰγῶν τε τελείων

Or some sage dream-teller, seeing
Such may teach us, why Apollo
Is it lack of hymns he charges,
If perchance of goats unblemished
for my tears requital pay!"

straight in downward course he flung.

in his scorn,
his arrows rung.

swift Achilles rose, and said.
we should seek our homes afar
stricken both by Plague and War.
or some priest will well beseem,
that 'tis Zeus who gives the dream.

is it stinted hecatomb?
and of lambs the savour may

“Ω 'Αχιλεύ, κέλεαί με, Διί φίλε, μυθήσασθαι
μῆνιν ̓Απόλλωνος, ἑκατηβελέταο ἄνακτος.
τοιγὰρ ἐγὼν ἐρέω· σὺ δὲ σύνθεο καί μοι ὄμοσσον
ἢ μέν μοι πρόφρων ἔπεσιν καὶ χερσὶν ἀρήξειν.
ἡ γὰρ οἴομαι ἄνδρα χολωσέμεν, ὃς μέγα πάντων
Αργείων κρατέει καί οἱ πείθονται 'Αχαιοί.
κρείσσων γὰρ βασιλεὺς, ὅτε χώσεται ἀνδρὶ χέρηϊ·
εἴπερ γάρ τε χόλον γε καὶ αὐτῆμαρ καταπέψῃ,
ἀλλά τε καὶ μετόπισθεν ἔχει κότον, ὄφρα τελέσσῃ,
ἐν στήθεσσιν ἑοῖσι. σὺ δὲ φράσαι εἴ με σαώσεις.”
Τὸν δ' απαμειβόμενος προσέφη πόδας ωκυς Αχιλλεύς ő
θαρσήσας μάλα εἰπὲ θεοπρόπιον ὅ τι οἶσθα.
οὐ μὰ γὰρ ̓Απόλλωνα Διί φίλον, ᾧτε σὺ, Κάλχαν,
εὐχόμενος Δαναοῖσι θεοπροπίας ἀναφαίνεις,
οὔτις ἐμεῦ ζῶντος καὶ ἐπὶ χθονὶ δερκομένοιο
σοὶ κοίλῃς παρὰ νηυσὶ βαρείας χεῖρας ἐποίσει
συμπάντων Δαναῶν, οὐδ' ἂν ̓Αγαμέμνονα εἴπῃς,
ὃς νῦν πολλὸν ἄριστος ̓Αχαιῶν εὔχεται εἶναι.”
Yet avail us, and fell ruin
He had ended. Then rose Calchas,
For he knew the past and present,
And the Danaan ships to Ilion
By the gift of prophet-vision,
He in friendly tones addressed them.-
Why from far the Lord Apollo
I will tell it, O Achilles,
On thine oath, that thou shalt help me,
For I trow my speech shall anger
O'er the folk of the Argeians,
Sure the King hath alway reason
And if even for the moment
Yet he bears the grudge thereafter,
Tell me; wilt thou save?" Achilles
"Speak, and fear not, whatsoever
For, I swear it by Apollo
Calchas, thou his votary tellest;
None shall lay the hand upon thee,
No not were it Agamemnon,
Though of all the bold Achaians
from the army ward away."

and the things of coming years;

"Dost thou bid me speak the cause
thus his bow for havock draws?
dear to Zeus. Yet first accord,
help me both with deed and word.
one, who wields a mighty sway
and whom all the Chiefs obey.
in contending with the vile;
he shall well digest his bile,
to fulfil another while.
in his turn the Seer addressed.
heav'n hath lodged within thy breast:
dear to Zeus, whose high decrees,
while Achilles lives and sees,
by the ships upon the coast,
from among
the Danaan host,
to be far the first he boast."

Κάλχαντα πρώτιστα κακ ̓ ὀσσόμενος προσέειπεν· “ Μάντι κακῶν, οὐ πώποτέ μοι τὸ κρήγυον εἶπας. αἰεί τοι τὰ κακ' ἐστὶ φίλα φρεσὶ μαντεύεσθαι, ἐσθλὸν δ' οὔτε τί πω εἶπας ἔπος οὔτ ̓ ἐτέλεσσας καὶ νῦν ἐν Δαναοῖσι θεοπροπέων ἀγορεύεις ὡς δὴ τοῦδ ̓ ἕνεκά σφιν ̔Εκηβόλος ἄλγεα τεύχει, οὕνεκ' ἐγὼ κούρης Χρυσηίδος ἀγλα' ἄποινα οὐκ ἔθελον δέξασθαι, ἐπεὶ πολὺ βούλομαι αὐτὴν οἴκοι ἔχειν. καὶ γάρ ῥα Κλυταιμνήστρης προβέβουλα, κουριδίης ἀλόχου, ἐπεὶ οὔ ἑθέν ἐστι χερείων,
οὐ δέμας οὐδὲ φυὴν, οὔτ ̓ ἂρ φρένας οὔτε τι ἔργα. ἀλλὰ καὶ ὡς ἐθέλω δόμεναι πάλιν, εἰ τόγ' ἄμεινον·
