THE SANGREAL I & IN THENDE THE DOLOROUS DETH & DEPARTYNG OUT OF THYS WORLD OF
THEM AL | WHICHE BOOK WAS REDUCED IN TO
ENGLYSSHE BY SIR THOMAS MALORY
Faithfully Edited word for word, line for line, and page for page, from the
Edition (1485) of W. Caxton in Lord Spencer's Library, Althorp, Northampton. With a Bibliographico-critical Introduction, the various readings of Wynkyn de Worde's Edition (1529), a Treatise on Malory's relation to the “ Merlin” in the Huth Library and other of his French sources; an Explanatory and Glossarial Index, and a Photographie Facsimile Specimen Page, by DR. H. OSKAR SOMMER; an Essay upon Malory as a Prose Writer, by MR. ANDREW LANG, &c.
D. NUTT, 270, Strand.
Editor and Publisher have been guided by the following con
siderations:Firstly, That Caxton's edition of Malory, one of the standard monuments
of the English language, deserved to be reproduced with absolute fidelity. Save that Roman is substituted for black-letter type, the present follows the original edition in every respect. The relation of the original to later editions has been determined in a similar
spirit of critical accuracy. Secondly, That the importance of Malory in his relation to the earlier
Arthurian romances, as well as to after English literature in general, and in especial to the technical development of English prose, should be adequately recognized. To effect this will be the object of much of the Editor's Introduction, of Mr. ANDREW LANG's Essay, and of
other matter accompanying the Text. Thirdly, That in the beauty of typographical execution and in excellence
of paper the present edition should be worthy of its contents, whilst, at the same time, its price should render it accessible to every public
Library and to the majority of private Students. There will be three issues : (a) On Japanese paper, Quarto size (12 by 94 inches). Twelve copies,
of which Ten for sale. Price £6 6s. (6) On Dutch Hand-made paper, Quarto size (12by 94 inches). One
Hundred and Eight copies, of which One Hundred for sale. Editions (a) and (6) will be signed and numbered by the Publisher. (c) Super Royal, 8vo, on antique laid paper. One Thousand and Fifty
copies, of which One Thousand for sale. Price, for the first 400
copies, 215. All these prices are nett subscription prices before publication, payable before or on delivery of Part I.
The work will comprise over 1000 pages, and will be issued in Two Parts—the Text first, the Introduction, &c., later. As soon as Part I. is issued to the Subscribers, the price of the whole will be raised to at least 30s. The Publisher reserves full liberty to further raise the price as he thinks fit.
The work will be issued, very strongly stitched, in a stout vegetable Parchment Cover (similar in style to “Child's Ballads”), which will allow of its being used without being bound. Subscribers who wish it may receive the Parts in Half-Roxburghe, gilt top, edges trimmed, at the extra cost of such binding. Intending subscribers are requested to kindly use the Order Form enclosed.
