On the Promotion of EDWARD THURLOW; Efq. te the Lord High Chancellership of England.

I.

ROUND Thurlow's head in early youth,

And in his sportive days,

Fair science pour'd the light of truth,
And genius fhed his rays.

2.

See! with united wonder, cry'd

Th' experienc'd and the fage, Ambition in a boy fupplied

With all the skill of age.

3.

Difcernment, eloquence and grace,

Proclaim him born to fway

The balance in th' highest place,

And bear the palm away.

4.

The praise bestow'd was juft and wife,

He sprang impetuous forth,

Secure of conqueft where the prize

Attends fuperior worth.

So the beft courfer on the plain
E'er yet he ftarts is known,

And does but at the goal obtain
What all had deem'd his own.

ODE то РЕАСЕ.

1.

COME peace of mind, delightful guest!

Return and make thy downy neft

Once more in this fad heart:

Nor riches I, nor pow'r pursue,
Nor hold forbidden joys in view,

We therefore need not part.

2.

Where wilt thou dwell if not with me,

From av'rice and ambition free,

And pleasures fatal wiles?

For whom alas! doft thou prepare

The sweets that I was wont to fhare,

The banquet of thy fmiles?

3..

The great, the gay, fhall they partake

The heav'n that thou alone canft make,
And wilt thou quit the ftream

That murmurs through the dewy mead,
The grove and the fequefter'd fhed,
To be a guest with them?

For thee I panted, thee I priz'd,
For thee I gladly sacrific'd

Whate'er I lov'd before,

And shall I fee thee ftart away, ist of
And helpless, hopelessy hear thee fay
Farewell! we meet no more?ok

HUMAN FRAILTY.

WEAK and irrefolute is man';

The purpose of to day,

Woven with pains into his plan,

To morrow rends away.

The bow well bent and smart the spring,

Vice feems already flain,

But paffion rudely snaps the string, 1. Mw Lak

And it revives again.

3.

Some foe to his upright intent

Finds out his weaker part,

Virtue engages his affent,

But pleasure wins his heart.

4.

'Tis here the folly of the wife

Through all his art we view,

And while his tongue the charge denies,

His confcience owns it true..

...

[ocr errors]

Bound on a voyage of awful length

And dangers little known,

A ftranger to superior strength,

Man vainly trufts his own.

6.

But oars alone can ne'er prevail

To reach the diftant coaft,

The breath of heav'n muft fwell the fail,

Or all the toil is loft.

THE MODERN PATRIOT. REBELLION is my theme all day,

I only wish 'twould come

(As who knows but perhaps it may)

A little nearer home.

2.

Yon roaring boys who rave and fight

On t'other fide the Atlantic,

I always held them in the right,

But most fo, when most frantic.

3.

When lawless mobs infult the court,

That man fhall be my toaft,

If breaking windows be the fport
Who bravely breaks the most.
