g fruit; [o fhall ye be my disciples (f). As the Father

hath loved me, fo have I loved you: continue ye in 10 my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall

abide in my love (g) even as I have kept my Fa11 ther's commandments, and abide in his love. There

things have I spoken unto you, that my joy night. 12 remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This

is my commandment (b), That ye love one another, 13 as I have loved vou. Greater love hath no man than 14 this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye

are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. 15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant

knoweth not what his lord doeth : but I have called

you friends (i); for all things that I have heard of 16 my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen

me,

but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain (k): that whatsoever ye

fhall ask of the Father in my naine, he may give it 17 you. These things I command you, that ye love 18 one another. If the world hate you, ye know that it 19

hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because

ye are not of the world, but I have chosen 20 of the world, therefore the world hateth you (1). Re

(f) It is only by being fruitful in good works, - that you can be truly my disciples. (g) You will continue to be beloved' by me, as I am for my

obes dience beloved by my Father.

(i) I have treated you in the most friendly and affectionate manper, inftru&ting you most plainly in all things necessary for your sal :

(k) That the effe&t of your labours, in converting multitudes to the faith in Chrift, may remain to the end of the world.

(1) If ye were like the relt of the world, you would escape all the persecution you must now expect for preaching against their vices.

HESE things have I spoken unto you, that ye

should not be offended (a). They shall put you out of the synagogues (b): yea, the time cometh,

that whosoever killeth you, will think that he doeth 3 God service. And these things will they do unto

(m) See Chap. xiii. 16. Matt. x. 24. (n) Their sin had not been so great as it now is. (0) By his miraculous gifts and operations. (p) I have chosen you to bear witness of my doctrine and manner of life; which you are best qualified to do, because you have been my constant companions and attendants.

(a) That you may not be surprised and discouraged in performing your duty. See Matt. xviii. 6. Luke xvii. 1.

(6) They will excommunicate you, and treat you like the most wicked of men, and at last put you to death; as if, by destroying you, they would recommend themselves to the favour of God.

will reprove the world of fin, and of righteousness, and 9 of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not ton Jo me (f); Of righteousness (8), becaufe I go to my 11 Father, and ye see me no more; Of jud ent (h), 12 because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet

many things to fay unto you (i); but ye cannot bear 13 them now. Howbeit, when he, the Spirit of truth, is

come, he will guide you into all truth ; for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,

(c) Violence and perfecution can never be pleasing ro the Father of mercies, nor consistent with Chrilt's religion ; the principal and distinguishing commandment of which is, to love one another, to fave men's lives, not to destroy them.

(d) It was not necessary to tell you these things until now, that I am about to be taken from

you. (e) Now you understand that I am to be taken from you hy death; you are overcome with forrow, and make no inquiry about the flate I am to enter upon afierwards.

The Comforter, by his powerful influences, will convinec you of the wickedness of the world in rejecting me:

(g) of the holinefs and justice of my cause, and the excellency of my doctrine, because the Father will receive me into glory:

(h). Of my power to destroy the dominion of fin and Satan, and .10 execute vengeance on the Jewish fate and nation.

(2) Your prejudices render you at present incapable of that full inftruction, which vou lhall receive hereafter through the holy Spirit,

(k) He will teach you all truth necessary to your apostolical office, and the full instruction of all who will attend to you: and he will adt, as I do, under the authority and direction of the Almighty Father.

(1) In a short time I shall depart out of this world, and in a short time I shall return, when the Father shall raife me up.

(m) So fhall it be in your case. The deepest distress and sharpest pains will be succeeded by the most lively joy and lasting comfort. fry After

stead; and whatsoever is necessary for the work of the mic nistry, the Father hiniself will give you, if you ask him in my name, as Mediator.

(p) In parables and allusions. The time draws ņear, when your prejudices will be removed, and your capacities enlarged, and then I shall inform you of the will of God more plainly and pçrféctly.

(a) Concerning the Father.

(r) I need not tell you that I will pray for you ; of that you must be assured.

(s) He knew that they were desirous to ask (verfe 19), and thereföre of his own accord, 'fatisfied their doubts, and convinced them that he knew what passed in their minds, though they had not ex.

(t) Be not too confident. Alas! ye know not how soon your ftrength will be severely tried.
