Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig49 tree, I saw thee (u). Nathanael answered and faith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art 50 the King of Israel. Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things 51 than these. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily I fay unto you, Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God (w) ascending and descending upon the Son of inan. (6) The expression of woman, in the antient languages, conveys no idea of disrespect, but is used to ladies of the first rank, and even i9 queens. This is an affair in which you are no way concerned ; leave it therefore to me, and I will choose a proper time for it. Nicodemus faith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, 5 and be born? Jesus' answered, Verily, verily I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit (b), he cannot enter into the kingdom of 6 God. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; () The wind blows without any controul or direction from us: it is known only by its effects : fu likewise are the influences of the holy Spirit of God secret and invisible, being entirely internal, and known to others only by the temper and disposition they inspire. (d) No man hath gone up into heaven to search into the secret counsels of God; and therefore no man can reveal them but the Son, who came down from heaven, and in his divine nature is continually present there. If it has not that effect, it is their own fault; for if they will embrace and obey the Gospel, they will escape con, .. demnation. |
