FENI COLLEGE.

AFFILIATED, 1921.

The Feni College was started in 1922 with affiliation up to the I.A. standard. For some years past the leaders of the people of Noakhali and particularly of this Sub-Division have been trying to start a College in order to remove the long-felt grievances of their sons and relatives. Their efforts were crowned with success, even at a time when the Non-co-operation movement was in its fullest swing and the Noakhali District Board donated a princely sum of Rs. 50,000 towards the construction of two spacious hostelsone for the Hindu students and another for the Mahomedan students. The people of this locality spared no pains to raise another Rs. 20,000 for the building where the College is located. From the very start it has been showing healthy signs of progress. The sudden but steady increase of number on the Roll is a convincing proof of its usefulness. The special feature of this institution is that the percentage of Muhammadan students is large as compared with that of any other institution in the Province. College stipends and concessions are awarded to poor and deserving boys in large number. The authorities of this college are particularly grateful to His Highness the Maharaja of Tripura, Babu Chandicharan Law and Kumar Arunchandra Singha Bahadur, M.L.C., for their liberal donations. The status of the College was raised to that of a First grade one in 1924 with affiliation in all the Arts subjects including Mathematics.

This College is one of the oldest educational institutions in the city. It was established about 82 years ago and was then known as St. Xavier's Day School. In 1871 the name of the establishment was changed to St. Joseph's Boarding and Day School. An Entrance Class for the Calcutta University was taught for a short time, but it was closed in 1882. Thereafter the curriculum followed was that of the Seven Standards of the European Code. With the advent of the Irish Christian Brothers, the building of the new St. Joseph's School was commenced. A magnificent three-storied building, with electric installations for lights and fans and all other necessary internal arrangements, was completed in 1895.

In 1890 the Irish Christian Brothers reopened the Entrance Class and were affiliated to the Calcutta University. For the six years that they continued presenting boys for this examination, they achieved remarkable results. In 1894 they opened a High School Class under the European Code, which eventually superseded the Entrance Examination; and in this they were equally successful.

The past successes of the College in the public examinations combined with the flattering testimonials accorded by Inspectors of Schools and Directors of Public Instruction, prove conclusively that the institution is in the forefront of European educational establishments in the country.

Within the last few years several important additions have been made. These are (1) a well-furnished Art Hall, (2) an up-to-date Laboratory, (3) a well-equipped Geographical Hall and (4) an efficient Workshop (Manual Hall) for Wood and Metal work.

The Irish Christian Brothers are a body of teachers entirely devoted to education. They have flourishing institutions not only in Ireland and India, but also in England, Australia, New Zealand, Gibraltar, South Africa, North America and Rome. Their name, their history and their achievements in the field of education are widely known.

St. Joseph's has once more been affiliated to this University and in the following subjects :1.A.-English, Bengali Composition, Urdu Composition, Alternative paper in English, Latin, French, History, Logic, Mathematics, Elements of Civics, Commercial Geography, Commercial Arithmetic and Elements of Book-keeping, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Physiology and Botany. I.Sc.-English, Bengali Composition, Urdu Composition, Alternative paper in English, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Botany, Geography, Physiology and French.

Babu Suranjan Dutt, the son of the late Rai Bahadur was the sole trustee for premises No. 129, Belilios Road, Howrah, which consisted of about 100 bighas of land and a palatial building, formerly the residence of the late Mr. I. R. Belilios, with several out-houses. With a view to a Park being laid out in the said premises he transferred the management of the same to the Muni. cipal Commissioners of Howrah.

In 1922 Babu Suranjan Dutt, in order to give effect to the pious wishes of his father, the late Rai Narasinha Dutt, Bahadur, and to perpetuate his memory formed a Provisional Committee of which he agreed to act as Secretary and applied to, and got sanction of, the University in 1923, to locate a Second Grade College called the "Narasinha Dutt College " in the aforesaid mansion for teaching Erglish, Vernacular Composition, Mathematics, History, Logic and Sanskrit giving a guarantee to maintain the College out of his own money if there be any deficit. He personally supplied the whole of the money for the purchase of furniture and books for the Library.

The members of the Park Committee, of which he is one, have been pleased to let out the said mansion with out-houses and a portion of the garden to the College on a nominal rent.

He is also the sole Trustee with regard to 233, Belilios Road, Howrah. He set apart a portion of the income of the said premises towards the maintenance of the College. The Commissioners of the Howrah Municipality have very kindly granted Rs. 600 last year towards the maintenance and have made a provision for the grant of a decent sum this year. It is expected that they will continue the help.

It was found that there was a general tendency towards learning Science and Babu Suranjan Dutt, the founder of the College, lost no time in getting the College affiliated, in addition, in Physics, Chemistry and Botany in the Intermediate Science standard, in 1924, and supplied the entire fund for the equipment of the different laboratories and for lecture apparatus from his own pocket.
