of more than £20,000. For a considerable increase of expenditure the Committee were in some degree prepared, by viewing the sure results of that great extension of our operations, which imperative calls of duty, and the stimulus constantly administered to them by the exhortations of numerous friends, had induced them to undertake. They are now anxious, very anxious, on the subject; but they do not, dare not despair. It remains for the friends of this great cause to redeem, forthwith, by renewed and abounding contributions of time, influence, and money, those pledges of support, by which the Committee have been repeatedly urged and cheered onwards in the enterprises of mercy which they have been appointed to conduct. By the blessing of God, by the liberality of their friends, and by the stern exercise, for a while at least, of that more restricted course of proceeding, which Christian prudence now renders indispensable, and to which Christian zeal itself must no longer refuse its acquiescence, they hope to be enabled gradually to liquidate the debt, and eventually to renew and amplify their efforts as humble instruments of the Society and of divine Providence, to bless and save a perishing world. On the whole, they still "thank God, and take courage."

DEPARTURE OF MISSIONARIES.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA.-The Rev. John Smithies and family, who embarked for the Swan-River settlement, on board the "Prima Donna," on the 8th of January, were delayed by contrary winds, first in the Downs, and then off Portsmouth; from whence they finally sailed on Monday, the 17th of February.

WESTERN AFRICA.-On the 25th of January, the Rev. William Fox embarked, by the "Sea Witch," on his return to St. Mary's, on the river Gambia, after a residence of a few months in this country for the establishment of his health, which had suffered by his labours in Western Africa since the year 1833. He is accompanied by Mrs. Fox and child, the Rev. William and Mrs. James, the Rev. William English, Mr. Walter Crowly, a Schoolmaster, Kakouta Sonko, a native youth, the son of the late King of Barra, who is placed under the care of Mr. Fox, and by two other natives. They were also detained at Portsmouth until the 18th of February; and as the winds have since been favourable, it is hoped that, before this time, they have reached their destination.

WEST INDIES.-The Rev. William Ingram embarked for Nevis, by the "Benjamin Green," on the 12th of February; and the Rev. W. H. Hann, at Falmouth, on the 4th of March, by the "Hope" packet, for Jamaica.

NORTH AMERICA: HUDSON'S-BAY TERRITORY.-The Rev. Messrs. G. Barnley, W. Mason, and R. T. Rundle, embarked at Liverpool, by the "Sheridan," for New-York, on the 16th of March, on their way to the territory of the Honourable the Hudson's-Bay Company, to commence Missionary operations among the settlers and native tribes of that vast region of North America, under the protection, and chiefly at the expense, of the Company, whose proposals to the Society have been of the most liberal and honourable character.

Contributions to the Wesleyan Missionary Society, received by the General Treasurers, up to the 16th of March, 1840.

Moneys received at the Mission-House.
