Mr. Robinson has boldly carried out his announcement of attempting a literal translation. It is fearful to place the version of a young aspirant beside that of "Glorious John," but Mr. Robinson's will not suffer from the comparison. Mr. Robinson's translation (of Ode IV.) deserves to stand beside John Milton's. Mr. Robinson is at once spirited and very literal.

Mr. Robinson's version pleases us very much. We will soothe you with the original Latin (Ode XXVI.), and Robinson's felicitous translation of it.

With the dry and tasteless, but accurate prose traslation of Smart, every school-boy is familiar; as all well educated persons are with the elegant version of Francis; but something more polished than Smart, and less paraphrastic than Francis, was called for; and that precise want, the learning, industry, and fine poetical power of Mr. Robinson have happily supplied. A literary effort of its kind with fewer blemishes will not readily be found.
