It is to be assumed that all lexicographical work on Old English, if reasonably accurate and methodical, is likely, when published, to be serviceable to the cause of English scholarship. It is with this thought that the present Glossary was undertaken as part of a thesis for the degree of Ph. D., at Yale University, at the suggestion of Professor Albert S. Cook. As to the particular form into which it is cast, this is due to the belief on the part of Professor Cook that English lexicography has not been sufficiently studied from the point of view of semasiology, and that translations of the Bible afford the readiest means of entering upon this work. The forms employed are those of the Corpus MS., that given in the first column of Skeat's edition. With a good concordance of the Latin Vulgate, such as Dutripon's, the student who uses this book will have entire command of the material, and will be able to determine in all cases the rendering of each Latin word included in the Glossary in every passage where it occurs in the Gospels. By the aid of the Old English-Latin Index the book can be made to serve the usual purposes of an Old English Glossary. Special and grateful acknowledgment is due to Professor Cook, nder whose most patient and friendly oversight the work was brought o completion, and to Dr. E. D.
