3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
The lamp of life deny ?
The joyful sound proclaim,
Has learnt Messiah's name!
And you, ye waters, roll,
It spreads from pole to pole :
The Lamb for sinners slain,
HYMN 113. L. M.
The Spirit accompanying the Word. 1 O SPIRIT of the living God !
In all thy plentitude of grace,
Descend on our apostate race.
To preach the reconciling word;
and unction from above,
Confusion, order in thy path;
Bid mercy triumph over wrath.
The wonders of the cross record;
HYMN 114. L. M.
God's promises of mercy to Israel. 1 GREAT God of Abraham! hear our prayer;
Let Abraham's seed thy mercy share :
And look on him they pierc'd, and mourn ! 2 Remember Jacob's flock of old;
Bring home the wanderers to thy fold;
“ Israel at last shall seek the Lord."
Cut off from their own olive-tree;
For thou canst graft them in again.
And write it in their inward parts ;
Which hides Messiah from their view. 5 O! haste the day, foretold so long,
When Jew and Greek, a glorious throng,
pour, And one Redeemer shall adore.
For the sovereign.
For all who bear the sovereign sway,
And thy vicegerents reign ; Rulers, and governors,
powers, And lo! in faith we pray
Nor shall we pray in vain.
Jesus, thy chosen servant guard,
From her anointed head :
To life eternal lead.
Cover her enemies with shame,
Their baffled hopes destroy;
And everlasting joy.
Late to thy heaven remove;
To fill a throne above.
A mourning people bend!
Our humble hopes depend.
Thy dreadful power display;
And still we live to pray.
Ungrateful as we are?
While mercy cries, "Forbear.”
4 O tum us, turn us, mighty Lord !
Bestow thy cheering grace!
Thanksgiving for national deliverance. 1 PRAISE to the Lord, who bows his ear,
Propitious to his people's prayer ;
Answers in his well-chosen day.
Rescued from fierce destructive rage,
To thee, our Saviour and our King !
Shall echo thy triumphant name;
To thee a temple shall become. 4 Still be it our supreme delight
To walk as in thy honour'd sight:
HYMN 118. L. M.
Praise for national peace.
A word of thine almighty breath
Thy smile is life, thy frown is death. 2 When angry nations rush to arms, And
rage, and noise, and tumult reign,
3 l'hy sovereign eye looks calmly down,
And marks their course, and bounds their power; Thy law the angry nations own,
And noise and war are heard no more. 4 Then peace returns with balmy wing:
Sweet peace ! with her what blessings fled!
Reviving commerce lifts her head.
All move subservient to thy will ;
And thy sublime decrees fulfil.
Thy kind protection still implore :
HYMN 119. c. M.
Thanksgiving for a plentiful harvest.
How rich thy bounties are !
Proclaim thy constant care.
The sower hid the grain,
And sent the early rain. 3 The spring's sweet influence, Lord, was thine;
The plants in beauty grew;
And mild refreshing dew.
