Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the Chief Priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. And he promised, and sought opportunity to convey him unto them in the absence of the multitude, Luke xxii. 3-6. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, John xiii. 2. He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night, 30. VER. 15. Εἶπε· Τί θέλετέ μοι δοῦναι, καγὼ ὑμῖν παραδώσω αὐτόν; Οἱ δὲ ἔστησαν αὐτῷ τριάκοντα ἀργύρια. And said unto them, a What will ye gipe me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. b a But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows, 1 Tim. vi. 9, 10. A. D. 33. b And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price: and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prized at of them. And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the good-man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company, Psal. Iv. 12-14. Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve, John vi. 70, 71. And he answered and said, a He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me. a Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me, Psal. xli. 9. But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table, Luke xxii. 21. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me, John xiii. 18. Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. Ånd when he had dipped the sop, he it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him, 26–28. The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: b but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born. a But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be? ver. 54. But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled, 56. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel, Gen. iii. 15. My God, My God, Why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou hearest not, and in the night season, and am not silent. But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn : they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him, 6-8. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O LORD: 0 my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from the sword; my Save me from the hon's mouth: for darling from the power of the dog. thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns, 1921. The Lord Gop hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting, Isa. 1. 5, 6. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined, Dan. ix. 26. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn, Zech. xii. 10. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my A. D. 33. : MATT. XXVI. 24. fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd: and the sheep shall be scattered and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones, xiii. 7. And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought, Mark ix. 12. Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? Luke xxiv. 25, 26. And said unto them, Thus it is written and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day, 46. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst, John xix. 28. For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced, 36, 37. For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain. And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre, Acts xiii. 27-29. And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, Opening and alledging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ, xvii. 2, 3. Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles, xxvi. 22, 23. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins ac A. D. 33. cording to the Scriptures, 1 Cor. xv. 3. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you, by them that have preached the Gospel unto you, 1 Pet. i. 12. b Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh! Matt. xviii. 7. Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the Chief Priests and elders, Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that, xxvii. 3-5. Let death seize upon them, and let them go down quick into hell: for wickedness is in their dwellings, and among them, Psal. lv. 15. But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee, 23. Šet thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour. Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. terity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth, cix. 6-15. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born, Mark xiv. 21. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name : Let his pos→ those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled, John xvii. 12. Men and brethren, this Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein and his bishoprick let another take, Acts i. 16-20. VER. 25. ̓Αποκριθεὶς δὲ Ἰούδας, ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν, εἶπε· Μήτι ἐγώ εἰμι, Ραββί; Λέγει αὐτῷ, Σὺ εἶπας. Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said. VER. 26. Εσθιόντων δὲ αὐτῶν, λαβὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὸν ἄρτον, καὶ εὐλογήσας, ἔκλασε, καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς, καὶ εἶπε· Λάβετε, φάγετε τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ σῶμά μου And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, band brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, © Take, eat; this is my body. a And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, Mark iv. 22. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you this do in remembrance of me, Luke xxii. 19. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new A. D. 33. testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me, 1 Cor. xi. 23-25. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their bread with gladness and singleness of heart, Acts ii. 46. And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight, xx. 7. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 1 Cor. x. 16. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger ; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst, John vi. 33-35. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: |
