“Malpa ” (Ape), on account of his

extreme homeliness, made his entrance into this world unheralded by song or much ado. His father, Reb Hershele, nicknamed “ Koza” (goat), because of the shape of his beard, was not only intrusted with the burying of the dead, but also with the exalted position of “Pod Shammes ” (under-beadle).
