O treat of a Man like Sir Walter Raleigh, of fuch approv'd Sufficiency, and of fo diffufive a Praife, fo equally great in fo many different Parts of Life, is like attempting a Landfchap from a high Hill, where the Variety and Extent of the Profpects ferve sather to confound, than entertain the Eye, and call for Judgment to correct the Fancy, which is too apt to run riot, and efpecially when employ'd on too many Objects.

Under fuch Disadvantages am I to trace Sir Walter, thro' a long and mix'd Series of Preferments and Miffortunes: And fuch were his Excellencies, either as a Statesman or Soldier, Seamen or Chymift, Chronologer or Hiftorian, that I am at a Lofs to determine 'upon which of his Characters I ought to be moft copious. The beft Method I can propofe to do him the most Juftice, and make him the leaft a Sufferer by my own
