I can find no Rhythm in English expreffive of the Antifpaft, and therefore I exprefs it by separate Words, as the Lord mighty; where the Particle the is to be pronounc'd without any Emphafis, to make it short.

[ocr errors][merged small]

Thefe Rhythms are all in mufical Proportions, and are divided into Arfis and Thefis, and in this Divifion the firft Part of the Foot is termed the Arfis, and the latter Part the Thefis: This mufical Divifion of the Syllables is from the Interval betwixt the Arfis and Thefis, and this Interval is fo very fmall, as to escape the Eye and the Ear; and if the Quantities have not this Interval, they will be confounded; for this Interval is the very Key of the Rhythm; all which is explain'd in my Stichology, Chap. IV.

The Proportion of thefe Rhythms is fourfold, equal, double, fefquialterate, and fupertertian. Equality of Rhythm is when the Arfis is equal to the Thefis, and the Proportion of these Rhythms is as the Unifon; and thefe are the Rhythms and their Propor

Simple and double, or double and fimple Proportion, is, when the Arfis is half, or double the Thefis. This is, therefore, the Proportion of the Octave or Diapafon, which is a I to 2, or 2 to I.

Supertertian Ratio is, when the Arfis and Thefis is as 4 to 3, or 3 to 4, and this Proportion is as the Diateffaron.

[blocks in formation]

An Explanation of the Terms Diapente, Diateffaron, Diapafon or Octave, Sefquialterate, and Supertertian.

Diapente is a musical Syftem of five Chords or Sounds, whofe Extremes are in proportion of 3 to 2.

Diateffaron is a Syftem of 4 Chords, or Sounds, whofe Extremes are in proportion of 4 to 3.

Diapafon or Octave, is a Syftem of 8 Chords or Sounds, whose Extremes are in proportion of 2 to 1. 'Tis term'd Octave, because of the 8 Chords, and Diapafon because it was the ancient perfect Syftem of all the 8 Chords.

An Epitrite is when in two Numbers the greater contains the less, and one third of the lefs, as 4 to 3; for 4 contains 3 and a third of 3, and this is the Symphony of the Diateffaron.

The Diapente or Hemiolus is, when in two Numbers the greater contains the lefs, and half of the lefs, as 3 to 2; for 3 contains z and a half of 2.
