DEDICATED, BY PERMISSION, TO

THE QUEEN.

MOST GRACIOUS SOVEREIGN,-I have written the History of THE LOYALISTS OF AMERICA AND THEIR TIMES in obedience to the requests of public men and the newspaper press of all parties, urged upon me more than twenty years since; but not less prompted by my own filial feelings of traditional affection.

The first edition of my work having received the general approbation of the Canadian public, and been disposed of in few months, and having been brought under the favourable notice of your Majesty by your Representative in Canada, I have the additional pleasure and honour of issuing the Second Edition of my work under ROYAL PATRONAGE, BY BEING PERMITTED TO DEDICATE IT TO YOUR MAJESTY.

The satisfaction of being able, after the lapse of more than fifty years of public life, to pay a filial tribute to the character and merits of the fathers and founders of my native country, is greatly enhanced by the patronage of a Sovereign whose praise is in all lands and the love of whom dwells in all Canadian and British hearts, and under whose benign reign the unity of the Empire has become a sentiment of intense affection, as well as of loyal obligation, among all classes, both in the Parent State and in the Colonies.

Such have been the life-long efforts, and such is the latest and fervent prayer of your Majesty's devoted Canadian subject,

TORONTO, November, 1880.

THE AUTHOR.
