3. Understanding.-This understanding is the truth, that God can redeem our fouls from the power of the grave, and bestow on us everlasting happiness in a future ftate.

Dark faying. The doctrine of a future state, not generally inculcated under the Old Testament. But we should here remark the imperfect knowledge which the wifest and best men had of a future state at this period, which according to them affected the good only; as to future punishment, they seem to have been entirely unacquainted with

it.

Thy dwelling place.-The lxx. (in the Ald. ed.) Vulg. Syr. and Arab. add the affix of the fecond perfon.
