Morning Prayer.

PSALM XXXV.

David prays for the protection of God against his enemies and calumniators. It is probable that this Pfalm relates rather to the perfecutions of Saul and his courtiers, than of Abfalom, becaufe David appears to rely fo much on his own righteousness; befides in Abfalom's rebellion he was not fo entirely deftitute as he is here reprefented.

1. PLEAD thou my caufe, O Lord, with them that strive with me; fight against them that fight against me.

2. Lay hand upon the fhield and buckler, and ftand up to help me.

3. Draw out the spear and scymitar to stop them that purfue me; fay to my foul, "I am thy falva

4. Let them be confounded and put to fhame, that seek after my foul; let them be turned back and brought to confufion, that devise my hurt.

5. Let them be as the chaff before the wind, and the angel of the Lord fcattering them.

6. Let their way be dark and flippery, and the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

7. For without cause have they hid for me the destruction of their net; without cause have they digged a pit for my foul.

8. Let mischief come upon him unawares, and his net that he hath hid privily, catch himself; into that very mischief let him fall.

9. And my foul fhall be joyful in the Lord, it fhall rejoice in his falvation.

10. All my bones fhall fay, Lord, who is like unto thee, who deliverest the poor from him that is too ftrong for him; yea the poor and needy from him that spoileth him?

II. Falfe witneffes rife up, they lay to my charge things that I have not known.

12. They reward me evil for good, even to the bereaving of my foul.

13. But as for me, when they were fick, my clothing was fack-cloth, I humbled my foul with fasting, and often did my prayer return into my bofom.

14. I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or brother: I bowed down heavily as one that mourneth for his mother.

15. But in mine adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: vile perfons gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they tore me, and they ceased not.

16. When I flipped they mocked with words of fcorn; they gnashed upon me with their their teeth.

17. Lord, how long wilt thou look on? refcue my foul from their destructions, my life from the young lions.

18. I will give thee thanks in the great congregation; I will praise thee among the multitude of the people.

19. Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully, rejoice over me; neither let them wink with the eye, that hate me without a cause.

20. For they speak not peace, but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land.

21. Yea they open their mouth wide against me, and fay, “Aha, Aha, our eye hath seen it."

22. This thou haft feen, O Lord, keep not filence; O Lord, be not far from me,

23. Stir up thyfelf and awake to judgment, even unto my cause, my God and my Lord.

24. Judge me, O Lord my God, according to thy righteousness, and let them not rejoice over me.

25. Let them not say in their hearts, there, so would we have it; let them not fay, we have swallowed him up.

26. Let them be ashamed and brought to confufion together, that rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with fhame and difhonour, that magnify themselves against me.

27. Let them fhout for joy and be glad, that favour my righteous caufe; yea, let them fay continually, "The Lord be magnified, who hath pleafure in the prosperity of his fervant.
