1. O GOD thou haft caft us off, thou haft fcattered us; thou haft also been displeased, O turn thee unto us again.

2. Thou haft made the land to tremble, thou haft rent it; heal the breaches thereof, for it fhaketh.

3. Thou haft fhewed thy people hard things, thou haft made us drink the wine of astonishment. 4. But thou haft given a banner to them that fear thee, that they may escape from before the bow of the

enemy.

5. That thy beloved people may be delivered, fave with thy right hand, and hear me,

6. God hath spoken in his fanctuary: therefore I will rejoice, I will divide Sichem, and mete out the valley of Succoth,

7. Gilead is mine, and Manaffes is mine, Ephraim alfo is my defender, Judah is my law-giver.

8. Moab is the pot of my ablution; to Edom I will caft my fhoe; over Philiftia do I triumph.

9. Who will lead me to the fenced city? who has brought me into Edom?

10. Who but thou, O God, who hast cast us off, and didft not go out with our armies.

11. Oh! give us help from trouble, for vain is the help of man.

12. Through God we fhall do valiantly, for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

PSALM LXI.

This Pfalm appears to have been written when David fled from his fon Abfalom, across the Jordan, as far as Mahanain, the very extremity of the land of Judea. The fixth and seventh verses, which speak of David in the third perfon were probably fung by a chorus.

1. HEAR my complaint O God, attend unto my prayer.

2. From the limits of the land do I cry unto thee, while my heart is in heaviness.

3. Thou wilt fet me high upon a rock, thou wilt lead me, for thou haft been my fhelter, and a strong tower for me against the enemy.

4. I will dwell in thy tabernacle for ever, and my truft fhall be under the covering of thy wings. 5. For thou, O Lord, hast heard my defires, and haft given me the heritage of those that fear thy

name.

6. Oh! add days unto the days of the king, and let his years be many generations.

7. Let him alfo abide before thee, O God, for ever; and let mercy and truth preferve him.

8. So will I fing praise unto thy name for ever, and perform my vows from day to day.

TWELFTH MORNING.

Morning Prayer.

PSALM LXII.

David declares his perfect confidence in the divine protection, and exhorts all men to place their hopes of fecurity in God's affiftance, not in their own ftrength. This Pfalm feems to relate to his perfecutions in the time of Saul.

1. TRUELY my foul waiteth still upon God, for of him cometh my falvation.

2. He only is my ftrength and my falvation, he is my defence fo that I fhall not greatly fall.

3. How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye fhall each of you be overturned, as a bowing wall, and as a tottering fence.

;

4. Their device is only to caft me down from my eminence; they delight in lies with their mouth they give good words, while in their heart they curfe.

5. My foul, wait thou only upon God, for in him is my hope.

6. He only is my strength and my falvation, he is my defence, fo that I fhall not fall.

7. In God is my falvation and my glory; God is my strong, rock and my refuge.

8. Trust in him always, O ye people; pour out your hearts before him, for God is our hope.

9. Men of low eftate are only vanity, men of high estate are a lie; in ascending in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity itself.

10. O trust not in oppreffion, and in rapine grow not vain; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

11. God hath spoken thefe two things which I have heard, that power belongeth unto God, and that unto thee, O God, belongeth mercy; for thou rendereft to every man according to his works.

PSALM LXIII.

This Pfalm was written by David, during the fedition of Abfalom, when he fled across the Jordan, and encamped in the wilderness of Judah. See 2 Sam. xvii. 29. The last verfe feems to have been fung by a chorus.

. 1. O GOD thou art my God, early will I feek thee.

2. My foul thirfteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee as a barren and dry land where no water is.

[ocr errors]

3. Thus do I long to fee thee in the fanctuary, that I may behold thy power and glory.

4. For thy loving kindness is better than life itfelf: therefore shall my lips praise thee.

5. As long as I live will I magnify thee in this manner, and lift up my hands in thy name.

6. My foul fhall be fatisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth fhall praise thee with joyful lips,

7. While I call thee to mind upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the watches of the night.

8. Because thou hast been my help, and under the fhadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

9. My foul hangeth upon thee, thy right hand upholdeth me.

10. But they that seek the hurt of my foul, fhall go down into the earth.

11. They shall fall by the edge of the fword, they fhall be a portion for foxes.

*

12. But the king fhall rejoice in God, and every one that sweareth by him fhall glory; while the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.
