Sins of Ignorance, and those I have committed through Want of Care and Circum1pection, but especially, all my wilful Sins, and thofe Tranfgreffions whereby I have any Ways fcandalized the Chriftian Profeffion, or occafioned others to fall, and which I lament before thee.

O Lord, Holy Father, who alone canst order the unruly Wills and Affections of finful Men, who gaveft thy Son to die, that he might redeem us from all Iniquity; pardon and rectify the Impurity of my Heart and Life, all irregular Appetites and Paffions, and every wicked Practice, of what Nature or Kind foever; that all my Members being mortified from all worldly and carnal Lufts, I may no longer live in the Flesh, to the Lufts of Men, but according to thy Will, O God; and for ever hereafter live godly, righteously, and foberly, in this prefent evil World.

And feeing I am not able to do these Things of myfelf, ftrengthen me, I befeech thee, O Lord, with the Holy Ghost, and daily increase in me thy manifold Gifts of Grace; the Spirit of Wisdom and Underftanding, the Spirit of Counfel and ghoftly Strength, the Spirit of Knowledge and true Godliness; and fill me, O Lord,.

with the Spirit of thy holy Fear; that I may have Victory, and Triumph against the Devil, the World, and the Flesh, and at the last obtain the Gift of eternal Life, which thou haft promifed to all thofe that fincerely love and obey thee, through Jefus. Christ our Lord. Amen.

Another Form of Confeffion, which may bei ufed inflead of the former.

O MOST Great and Glorious Lord God, just and terrible in thy Judgments to all obftinate and rebellious Sinners, but of infinite Mercy to fuch as truly repent, and turn unto thee; look down, I befeech thee, with the Eyes of Mercy, upon me, who now present myfelf before thee, acknowledging that I am not worthy to lift up my Eyes to the Throne of thy glorious Majefty. O Lord, my Sins are fo many. and fo great, that it is owing to thy infi nite Goodnefs and Mercy, that I have now an Opportunity of humbling myself before thee, and begging Mercy for my Soul, which, I confefs, has greatly finned against thee.

[blocks in formation]

I acknowledge, O my God, that thou haft, by innumerable Inftances, manifested thyfelf to be a moft kind and indulgent Father; but alas! I have abused thy Goodnefs, and made very ungrateful Returns for thy exceeding Kindness and Mercy. Inftead of loving and delighting in thee, and paying thee a filial and cheerful Obedience, I find in myself many Times a great Pronenefs to offend thee, and a great Backwardnefs and Indifpofition to do thofe Things which thou requirest of me.

O Lord! I lament and bewail the Còrruption of my Nature, most forrowfully confefling before thee, that I have too great a Defire after the Things of this World ; too great a Fonduefs for the Profits and Pleafures of it: And though I am fully perfuaded, that it is my Happiness and Privilege, as well as my Duty, to love and ferve thee, yet I am very apt to forget thee, and to grow careless and remifs in that great and important Work, which thou haft given me to do.

O my God! I confefs with Sorrow that this World hath taken fuch Hold of my Affections, that I neither love thee, ferve thee, nor obey thee, as I ought to do; my Devotion to thee is many Times cold and languid;

languid; my Prayers are full of Wanderings, Deadnefs, and Distractions, and the very best of my religious Duties are accompanied with fo many Failings and Imperfections, that I have great Cause to humble myself before thee.

"How greatly, O God, "have I offended thee, by "Luft and Intemperance, by Peevishness, Paffion, "and Anger, by Covetoufness and`Ambition, by Pride and Envy, by Prejudice " and Ill-will towards my Neighbour, by murmuring and repining at the Difpen"fations of thy Providence, and by an unwillingness to refign myfelf to thy Difpofal in all Things? How frequently "have I violated my baptifinal Engage ments, by preferring the Vanities of this "wicked World before thy Favour, and by fuffering my Heart, which has been to " often dedicated to thy Service, to be brought under the Bondage and Domi"nion of Sin and Folly?"

And what shall I now fay unto thee, O thou Preferver of Men! O Lord I have no Hope but in thy Mercy and the infinite Merits of my dear Redeemer; And if thou rejecteft me, I am loft and undone for ever. L 5 But,

But, O thou compaffionate Lover of Souls! who knoweft whereof we are made, and remembereft that we are but Duff, turn not thy Face from me, nor caft thy Servant away in Displeasure; let the Interceffions of thy beloved Son prevail in my Behalf, and for the Sake of his meritorious Death and Paffion, for all that he has done, and all that he has fuffered for me, have Mercy upon me; pardon and forgive, I most earnestly and unfeignedly befeech thee, all the Sins and Follies of my Life paft, which are more than I can number, and greater than I am able to bear; and more efpecially, O my God, lay not to my Charge-[Here again may be named Particulars.] O cleanfe me from all my fecret and unknown Tranf actions, and vouchfafe, O merciful Father, to be reconciled unto me, who am forry for my Sins, and grieved that I have offended thee, my moft gracious Lord and Mafter, to whom I owe all the Returns of Love and Duty that can poffibly be paid by a Creature to his Creator.

O Lord, referve not my Sins to be punished in the Day of thy fierce Anger; (for who can dwell with everlasting Burnings! who is able to abide the Fury of thy Wrath! but spare me, O. most mighty God, and
