They that trust in their wealth, &c. none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him, &c. that he should still live for ever, and not see corruption: for he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool, &c. for when he dieth, he shall carry nothing away.Ps. xlix. 6, 7. 9, 10. 17.

Man that is born of a woman is buat hand-breadth, and mine age as noof few days, and full of trouble; he thing before thee, &c. Spare me, &c. cometh forth like a flower, and is cut before I go hence, and be no more.down; he fleeth also as a shadow', Ps. xxxix. 4, 5. 13. and continueth not, &c. seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee; thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass, &c. Man dieth and wasteth away; yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he? &c. Man lieth down, and riseth not till the heavens be no more, &c. If a man die, shall he live again? Shall any teach God knowledge? &c. One dieth in his full strength (or very perfection), being wholly at ease and quiet his breasts are full of milk, &c. and another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure? they shall lie down alike in the dust.-Job xxi. 22-26.

I know that thou wilt bring ne to death, and to the house appointed for all living.-Job xxx. 23.

If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath all flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again into dust.—Job xxxiv. 14, 15.

In death there is no remembrance of thee in the grave who shall give thee thanks?-Ps. vi.5. Isa. xxxviii 18. Ps. lxxxviii. 10-12. cxv. 17. xxx. 9.

The terrors of death are fallen upon me, &c. Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. Ps. lv. 4. 23. cxvi. 3.

And unto God the Lord belong the issues from death.-Ps. lxviii. 20.

I have said, Ye are gods, and all of you children of the Most High: but ye shall die like men.-Ps. lxxxii. 6. 7.

What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.-Ps. lxxxix. 48.

Thou turnest men to destruction, &c. they are like grass which groweth up: in the morning it flourisheth and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down and withered, &c. The days of our years are threescore years and ten: and if by reason of strength they be fourscore, yet, &c. it is soon cut off, &c. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.-Ps. xc. 3. 5, 6. 10. 12.

He remembereth that we are dust: as for man, his days are as grass: as the flower of the field, so he flourisheth for the wind passeth over it, and it is gone.-Ps. ciii. 14—16.

Thou takest away their breath; they die, and return to their dust.Ps. civ. 29.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.-Ps. cxvi. 15.

Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.Ps. cxliv. 4. 1 Chron. xxix. 15. cii. 11.

Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help his breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth: in that very day his thoughts perish.-Ps. cxlvi. 3, 4.

When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish.-Prov. xi. 7. The righteous hath hope in his death.-Prov. xiv. 32.

Boast not thyself of to morrow, for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.—Prov. xxvii. 1.

How dieth the wise man? as the fool.-Eccles. ii. 16.

A time to be born, and a time to die, &c. all go unto one place, all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again; who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? Eccles. iii. 1, 2. 20, 21.

As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return, to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, &c.-Eccles. v. 15, 16. Job i. 21:

The day of death is better than the day of one's birth it is better to go to the house of mourning, &c. Eccles. vii. 1, 2. iv. 1, 2.

No man hath power of the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death; and there is no discharge in that war.-Eccles.

viii. 8.

A living dog is better than a dead lion, &c. There is no work, &c. in the grave whither thou goest.-Eccles. ix. 3-5. 10.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.Eccles. xii. 7.

He will swallow up death in victory, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces.-Isa, xxv. 8.

Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die, &c. I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave, &c. The grave cannot praise thee; death cannot celebrate

thee; they that go down into the pit cannot hope for thy truth: the living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I lo this day.—Isa. xxxviii. 1, 2. 10, 11. 18, 19.

All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it.-Isa. xl. 6—8. James i. 10, 11. 1 Pet. i. 24.

That thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of nan which shall be made as grass.— lisa. li. 12.

The righteous perisheth, and no nan layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away: none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come.-Isa. lvii. 1, 2. 2 Kings xxii. 19, 20.

Lamentation and bitter weeping: Rachel weeping for her children, because they were not.-Jer. xxxi. 15. Matt. ii. 16-18.

Son of man, behold I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke: yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down, &c. My wife died, &c. this was for a sign.-Ezek. xxiv. 16--18. 24.

Go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest and stand in thy lot at the end.-Dan. xii. 13.

Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever? Zech. i. 5.

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plague! &c.-Hosea xiii. 14. 1 Cor. xv. 55.

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, &c. -Matt. x. 28.

Jesus said unto the man on the cross, Verily I say unto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in Paradise, &c. Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.-Luke xxiii. 42, 43. 46. Ps. xxxi. 5.

Simeon said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace; for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.-Lake ii. 28, 29.

The beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. -Luke xvi. 22.

I must work, &c, while it is day: the night cometh when no man can work.-John ix. 4.

And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother, &c. When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping, which came with her, he groaned in his spirit and was troubled, &c. Jesus wept.-John xi. 19. 33. 35.

Ananias and Sapphira, both fell down, and yielded up the ghost.Acts v. 5. 10.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!-Acts vii. 59.

And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.-Acts viii. 2.

He hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed; and the bounds of their habitation.-Acts xvii. 26. 2 Sam. vii. 12. 1 Chron. xvii. 11.

Whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord; whether we live, therefore, or die, we are the Lord's: for to this end Christ both died and rose again, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. -Rom. xiv. 8, 9.

The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, &c.-1 Cor. xv. 56, 57. We have this treasure in earthen vessels.-2 Cor. iv. 7.

If our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, &c. We groan, being burdened, &c. Whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord we are confident, I say,

and willing to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. -2 Cor. v. 1, 2. 6-8.

I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago; whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell.2 Cor. xii. 2.

To die is gain, &c. having a desire to depart and to be with Christ, which is far better.-Phil. i. 21. 23.

Indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.— Phil. ii. 27.

Who shall change our vile body. &c.-Phil. iii. 21.

I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep; that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.1 Thess. iv. 13.

Christ, who died for us: that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.-1 Thess. v. 10.

We brought nothing into the world: and it is certain we can carry nothing out.-1 Tim. vi. 7. Job. i. 21.

I am now ready to be offered: and the time of my departure is at hand: I have fought a good fight.-2 Tim. iv. 6, 7.

He took part of the same, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil: and deliver them, who, through fear of death, were all their lifetime subject to bondage.-Heb. ii. 14, 15.

It is appointed unto men once to die; but after this the judgment.Heb. ix. 27.

But ye are come, &c. to the spirits of just men made perfect.-Heb. xii. 22, 23.

Here have we no continuing city; but we seek one to come.-Heb. xiii. 14.

Go to, now, ye that say, to day, or to morrow, we will go into such a city, &c. whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow: for what is your life? it is even a vapour that appear

eth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this or that.-James iv. 13-15. i. 10. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.-1 Pet. i. 17.

I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts. 1 Pet. ii. 11. 1 Chron. xxix. 15.

Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle; even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.2 Pet. i. 14.

Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord, from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.-Rev. xiv. 13.

Blessed are those servants whom the Lord when he cometh shall find watching.-Luke xii. 37, 38.

CHAP. XXXIII.

OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD. So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake.-Job xiv. 12.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, &c. and though after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God; whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another.-Job xix. 25-27. Ps. xlix. 15.

I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.-Ps. xvii. 15.

He will swallow up death in victory, &c.-Isa. xxv. 7, 8.

Thy dead men shall live: together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake, and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs; and the earth shall cast out the dead. Isa. xxvi. 19.

And many that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake: some to everlasting life, and some to shame, &c. Thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.-Dan. xii.

2. 13.

I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from

death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction.Hosea xiii. 14.

But as touching the resurrection from the dead, &c. I am the God of Abraham, &c. God is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living.-Matt. xxii. 31, 32. Luke xx. 35.37, 38.

Many bodies of the saints which slept, arose at the death of Christ.Matt. xxvii. 52.

Thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.-Luke xiv. 14.

The hour is coming, in which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth: they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life, &c.-John v. 28, 29.

I should lose nothing; but should raise it up again at the last day, &c. and I will raise him up at the last day. John vi. 39, 40. 44. 54.

I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life he that believeth in me, &c.-John xi. 24-26.

Because I live, ye shall live also.John xiv. 19.

They taught the people; and preached, through Jesus, the resurrection from the dead.-Acts iv. 2.

And when they heard of the resurrection from the dead, some mocked. Acts xvii. 32.

Of the hope and resurrection from the dead I am called in question, &c. The Sadducees say, There is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.-Acts xxiii. 6. 8. xxiv. 21.

They themselves also allow that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.Acts xxiv. 15.

Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?—Acts xxvi. 8.

God who quickeneth the dead, &c. -Rom. iv. 17.

The earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation

of the sons of God, &c. We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption; to wit, the redemption of our body.-Rom. viii. 19, 23.

And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.-1 Cor. vi. 14.

The resurrection of the dead proved at large; and with what bodies; and the manner of the resurrection.-1 Cor. xv. 12-56.

That we should not trust in ourselves, but in God, which raiseth the dead.-2 Cor. i. 9.

He which raiseth up the Lord Jesus, shall raise up us also by Jesus; and shall present us with you. -2 Cor. iv. 14.

The Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.-Eph. iv. 30.

We look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ; who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.-Phil. iii. 20, 21.

He is the head of the body, the church; who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead, &c.-Col. i. 18.

Hymeneus and Philetus, who, concerning the truth, have erred, saying, That the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.-2 Tim. ii. 17, 18.

Not laying again the foundation, &c. of the resurrection of the dead.Heb. vi. 1, 2.

Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.-Heb. xi. 35.

Thy wrath is come; and the time of the deed, that they should be judged.-Rev. xi. 18.

I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, &c. and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years: but the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection: blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power, &c. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, &c. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell (or the grave) delivered up the dead which were in them.-Rev. xx. 4-6. 12, 13.

CHAP. XXXIV.

When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with OF CHRIST'S SECOND coming to the him in glory.-Col. iii. 4.

I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope: for if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, That we which are alive, and remain unto the coming of the Lord, shall not prevent them which are asleep for the Lord himself shall descend, &c. and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain, shall be caught up together with them, &c.-1 Thess. iv. 13-17.

JUDGMENT; AND RENDERING UNTO

Ir thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door.-Gen. iv. 7.

Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?—Gen. xviii. 25.

The wicked is reserved to the day of destruction: they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.-Job xxi.30.

I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth.-Job xix. 25.

The ungodly shall not stand in judgment; nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.-Ps. i. 5.
