And by this singing it is not meant that one should sing sacred music, while the rest sit reading, conversing, or listening, as they please; a practice which may be thought to border on irreverence, when the words sung are words of worship addressed to God. But this is intended, that all, including the domestics, should stand up in their places at the hour of prayer, and join in singing a psalm or hymn, by way of worshipping God, acknowledging his presence, and rejoicing in his good ness. It would be well if to services such as these there were added a catechetical examination of the children and younger servants, in the portion of Scripture and exposition of the day. ter of the family has Where the mas not leisure, this might often be effected by the mistress, with the part of the family which is under her charge. And in either case the practice will be found generally useful in promoting the edification of the household. The Scripture and the exposition will be listened to with more attention, when the hearers have to give account of what they hear. Increased attention to the word of truth will be accompanied with increased earnestness. in prayer and praise. And each family thus instructed in the will of God, and practised in the worship of his holy Name, would present to others an example of faithfulness and peace, likely, under the divine blessing, to spread widely the knowledge of salvation, and the love of Jesus Christ, our Lord.
