GENTLEMEN: In accordance with the Act of Assembly of March 8, 1860, I have the honor to submit an abstract of births, marriages and deaths which have occurred in this City during the year 1896. The number of births reported during the year amounted to twenty-nine thousand seven hundred and fifty-three (29,753), a decrease from the previous year of eighty-five (85). The marriages amounted to seven thousand four hundred and ninety-one (7,491), a decrease from the previous year of two hundred and seventeen (217). The deaths amounted to twenty-three thousand nine hundred and eighty-two (23,982), an increase of one hundred and eighty-six (186) over the previous year. The following table shows the ratio of deaths, with population, for the past thirty-six years: * U. S. census-the intervening years population estimated. The number of deaths from scarlet fever amounted to sixty-one (61), a decrease from the previous year of eighteen (18). The following comparative table shows the number of deaths from each disease for the past twenty-nine years: BIRTHS. The number of births reported amounted to twentynine thousand seven hundred and fifty-three (29,753), a decrease of eighty-five (85) from the previous year. Of these, fifteen thousand five hundred and thirty-four (15,534) were males, and fourteen thousand two hundred and nineteen (14,219) females. Five hundred and seventy-two (572) males were black, as were five hundred and fourteen (514) females, making a total of one thousand and eighty-six (1,086). Two (2) births of triplets occurred during the year, year, and two hundred and seventy-five (275) births of twins. The illegitimate births reported amounted to eight hundred and forty-three (843). |
