VII.-The Secretary shall give notice at Christmas in each year, to such Members as have not then ordered their proper an.ount of books.

VIII-A List of the Members, arranged according to the order of circulation, is to be placed on every work before it is issued by the Secretary.

iX.-The Secretary shall mark on the list, according to his discretion, the number of days allowed for the perusal of each volume; but the time allowed shall in no case exceed a month.

X.-The Secretary is first to put a work into the hands of the Member ordering it, after having marked on it a date not more than fourteen days later than the actual day on which he sends it out. From that Member it is to pass at the expense of the Member sending it to the next on the list, and so on till it has passed through the Society; the Member into whose hands it comes last returning it to the Secretary, in time for the Annual Sale, under penalty of two shillings and sixpence.

XI.-The Secretary in sending out several works at one time to the same member, shall use his discretion in marking the dates, so that the books may be as little concurrent as possible.

XIII.-Every Member is to mark on the list the days on which he receives and forwards a work, under penalty of one shilling. The time allowed for each volume of a work, containing more than one volume, is in succession and not concurrent, whenever two or more of the volumes are in a Member's hands at once, but not otherwise. Therefore, if any Member has neglected to enter the time upon this principle, the Member next after may correct it if he chooses.

XIV. A fine of sixpence a day is to be paid for every volume detained beyond the assigned time, (Sundays, and the days of receiving and sending out, not included); but the fine shall cease as soon as it amounts to the original cost of the work, and the member so fined shall in lieu of paying the fine take the book at the full cost.

XV.-Books lost, or materlally injured, shall be replaced by the Secretary, at the charge of the party losing or injuring them.

XVI.-At the Annual Meeting all books not in circulation shall be put up for sale at one-half of the original price, and if no advance be made, the Member who ordered the work shall be the purchaser.

[blocks in formation]

XVII. The Member who has purchased the first volume of a set shall take the rest of the volumes at half-price.

XVIII.-A Member ordering a work of, or above the price of three guineas, must be answerable for two-thirds of its value at the sale; and no Member shall, in the course of the year, order any book or books to more than the amount of five guineas.

XIX.-The Secretary may call a General Meeting of the Society, if any special reason should appear to require it.

[ocr errors]

XX. The vacancies in the list of Members may be filled up by the consent of the majority present at a General Meeting.

XXI.-Any Member not present at the Annual Meeting shall pay a fine of five shillings, unless his non-attendance be caused by illness, or absence from the country, or unless he have given two days' written notice to the Secretary of his inability to attend.

XXII.-The application of the funds in hand is to be decided on at the Annual Meeting.

XXIII. These rules to be printed and inserted in every volume.
