The first is a rare edition of the primera parte. The segunda parte is not by Aleman, but by Juan Marti under the assumed name of Matheo Luxan de Sayavedra. Aleman himself complained of having been, through a prodigal communication of his papers, robbed of his original materials; and in the title-page of his own 'segunda parte' | says; "Let the reader take notice, that the second part published before this is none of mine, and that this is the only one I recognize."

Burgos, 1619 Madrid, 1661 ib. 1750

"The first edition of the first part appeared, Madrid, 1599, and two editions besides in the same year. The most ample portraiture of the Cantariberas, or the gayer one of Picaros, that is to be found in Spanish Literature. It was very successful, falling in with the vices and humours of the times of the loose Court of Philip III. after the hypocrisy and constraint of the last dark years of Philip II. The genuine second part appeared, Valencia, 1605, The Second part, published 1603, under the name of Mateo Luxan de Saavedra, though not without literary merit, is a forgery."-Ticknor, 1849, III. p. 26.

Stuttg. 1839-40 The beauty of the Cid Romances is too well known to require further praise. The prose Romance "Et Conde Lucanor" is one of the oldest literary monuments of Spain; it is the oldest collection of Novels of the Spaniards, composed during the XIVth Century; the first edition appeared at Seville, 1575. The tales are famous for the fascination of their style, and as connecting the Prose Literature of the East and West, many of the tales being derived from Moorish sources. The work was exceedingly rare, no new edition having appeared for the lasl 200 years. For an elaborate account see Ticknor's Spanish Literature.

"Calderon, a celebrated Spanish writer of the 17th century, one of the most copious and esteemed dramatists in Spain, equal to Lope de Vega."

"His boundless and inexhaustible fertility of invention, his quick power of seizing and prosecuting everything with dramatic effect, the unfailing animal spirits of his dramas, if we may venture on the expression, the general loftiness and purity of his sentiments, the rich faculty of his verse, the abundance of his language, and the clearness and precision with which he embodies himself in words and figures, entitle him to a high rank as to the imagination and creative faculty of a poet.”— Quarterly Review.
