"So elaborate, costly, and suggestive a work as that which has been produced by Mr. J. B. Waring, with the aid of Mr. Vincent Brooks, deserves to be set as prominently before those who are interested in the subject of it, or are likely to be acted on by it, as our means will admit of. To produce a work by means of chromolithography, containing forty-one large folio plates, blazing with colour, accompanied with historical and descriptive letter-press, on paper de luxe, solidly bound, involves no small risk financially; and the effort, when worthily made, as this is, should be supported by those who concern themselves with the arts of the country. It is not every individual, however well-disposed, who can afford six guineas for a book; but the more wealthy buyers, public bodies, municipal libraries, and schools of design should consider it their duty to assist in such cases by the purchase of copies. For years our architecture has been bald and lifeless;-restricted to ill-understood imitations, and permitted no aid from her children arts.

The forty-one plates in the work before us are appropriated to stained glass, eight; fresco ornament and figures, eight; wood inlay, five; and marble and enamel inlay, twenty."-Builder.

Y. Ottley, Esq. and by him highly prized, but reverted back on his decease to the family by whom it had originally been presented. Mr. Ottley obtained a translation of a prayer in the volume, which is as follows:-" In the name of God. Amen.-Prologue-I, a poor cell Monk of the Carthusian Order, am so idle in my peaceful tranquility in consequence of the corrupted nature of my soul, that I must always devise and exercise some new Act of Devotion, and as a new year is now begun, (Anno Domini 1445), I feel disposed from that to send all hearts a New years Gift that they may pray to God for my Soul. Life is gone-Time flies away Death comes. The Lord grant that we may die in a proper manner. In the first place I shall compose Three Short Prayers for the Feast of Christmas, likewise for all the Festivals of our Lady Mary," &c. &c.

Impressum in celebri Lothoringie pago divi Nicolai de portu per petrum jacobi presbyterum, loci paganum, 1518

This volume, printed in a village near Nancy, is extremely rare, and very curious. It is ornamented with many woodcuts by Jacobus, executed in a spirited style, which represent the various events of the war of Lorraine.

"The celebrated Liber Nanceidos." "It is a poem written in Latin hexameter verse by P. Blaru, descriptive of the memorable siege of Nancy in 1476, by Charles the Rash, Duke of Burgundy, who perished before the walls. His death is described in the sixth book, the passage relating to it beginning—

'Est in Nanceijs aratro locus utilis aruis.'

A woodcut portrait of the commanding French general, Renet, is in the frontispiece. A good copy of this handsomely printed, and rather interesting work should always grace the shelves of an historical or classical collector." Dibdin's Tour, vol. ii. p. 543.

There are 237 large cuts in this fine work, 92 contain Burghmair's mark, H. B., and one that of Schaeuffelein; they are executed in a very bold manner, all those which contain the mark of Hans Burghmair show a decided superiority in point of engraving.

Nurmberg, Koberger, 1491

A tall clean copy of an extremely rare and curious work. The woodcuts in this most extraordinary volume, which occupy the whole length of the page, represent subjects of the Old and New Testament, but chiefly the life and passion of our Saviour. Many of the designs are highly singular, and are evidently the work of WOLGEMUTH, the tutor of ALBERT DURER, and the engraver of the cuts for the NUREMBERG CHRONICLE. Strutt characterises the productions of this artist as "bold in execution and original in design."
