VERY RARE. The price of copies has gradually risen. In 1853 Dr. Hawtrey's copy fetched £7. 10s; 1859, Lady Webster's copy fetched £16.

This invaluable collection consists of reprints of the early historians of the New World, including Columbus, Cortes, Alvarado, Godoy, Oviedo, Gomara, Zarate, Torres, Alvar Nunez, Cabeça de Baca, &c. The original editions of these authors are scarcely ever to be met with. It is said, that positive proof exists of more than 100 copies of some of the parts having been destroyed, so that only about 200 sets could have been completed; the work has, in consequence, become very scarce in Spain.

Each of the above volumes contains four of the eight pieces which form a complete set of the Tratados. They should be united, as both together contain six, including the rarest, of these celebrated treatises. The "Relacion de las Indias," in the above copy has the four leaves, Un Pedaço de una Carte," almost always wanting, unknown to De Bure, and almost all Bibliographers.

[ocr errors]

De Bure, in whose time only five parts were known, speaks of their excessive rarity. Richarderie has no other particularisation of parts than those noticed by De Bure; nor was Llorente, in his notice of the works of Las Casas, better informed, as he only mentions the first five.

"In parting from Las Casas, it must be felt that all ordinary eulogies would be feeble and inadequate. His was one of those few lives that are beyond biography, and require a history to be written in order to illustrate them. His career affords, perhaps, a solitary instance of a man who, being neither a conqueror, a discoverer, nor an in ventor, has, by the pure force of benevolence, become so notable a figure that large portions of history cannot be written, or at least cannot be understood, without the narrative of his deeds and efforts being made one of the principal threads upon which the history is strung. Other men have undertaken great projects of benevolence, and have partially succeeded in them; but there is not any man whose success or failure in such endeavours has led to the great civil or military events which ensued upon the successes and failures of Las Casas. Take away all he said and did, and preached, and wrote, and preserved (for the early historians of the New World owe the records of many of their most valuable facts to him); and the history of the conquest would lose a considerable portion of its most precious material- Helps.
