MEDICINA EST QUE CORPUS VEL TUETUR VEL RESTAURAT, etc. An ancient Gaelic MS., in the Irish character, and with rudely executed INITIALS, some in red and green, of that grotesque character, and elaborate interlacements, by which early Irish MSS. are distinguished, two parts, containing in the first a HERBAL, specifying in alphabetical order the names and virtues of Simples: the second being a Treatise divided into chapters upon the nature and symptoms of Diseases, small 4to. 118 leaves, bd. recently come from the Highlands of Scotland, £25.

ca. Sec. XIV. The extraordinary rarity of Highland MSS. is well known; but to meet with such a specimen as the above, ENTIRELY IN THE IRISH CHARACTER, and of a period so remote, is something unprecedented. Philologists and Celtic scholars should examine this monument of the ancient Gaelic language; it will be a curious study to discover how far there existed in early times a divergence between the Irish and the Scotch dialects. Apart from its wonderful rarity, the intrinsic merit of the MS will consist chiefly in its philological value, although there is also an interest in any work which conveys the opinions of a remote age, and a segregated race, upon the Art of Healing and the Medicinal merits of Botany. Each chapter or section begins with a Latin heading or phrase, also in the Irish character, explained and developed in Gaelic. The division which begins with the heading given above is the more ancient portion of the MS.; the remainder is probably somewhat later, and on the first few leaves of this part are some marginal notes, correcting or explaining the old abbreviations or orthography, such as "for chiann" for farcan," and "petroselinum" for "pet. sidinu." In one place the note is English, in a handwriting of the Elizabethan period, written over "Afodillus etc " thus: "Daffadil. Thistil or sea holm not ramps. At the divisions of the sections, there are prayers, and verses, etc.; in one of which occurs the name McEvan -"Chuir McIebhin san Dan." In another place appears the name of "Ealadhnoir I-Coinnidh," who is perhaps the same lady who returns thanks to God on another page, in mingled Latin and Gaelic, for her recovery from a disease of the eyes, "septies canit. ilinga mea." Elsewhere there is a Genealogical list of names, of the family of the Mac Donnells or Macdonalds, running down an entire page. Altogether, it may be confidently asserted that such an article as this never before appeared in any bookseller's catalogue.
