2719 CHINESE BOTANY. 49 BEAUTIFULLY COLOURED DRAWINGS of CHINESE PLANTS in bloom, finished with the utmost care and delicacy, in which respect they may be considered along with the above as the perfection of Chinese imitative art, hf. green morocco, £8.

The above, evidently executed at the same time, and by the same hands, form a Collection of Chinese Drawings unique as to their minuteness, fidelity to nature and beauty of execution, and as far as regards the first two volumes, unrivalled by those of an European or any other nation. In fact, at first sight, so striking is the artistic effect that no one would believe them to be anything but the most finished productions of European artists; on closer inspection, however, the peculiar minuteness of detail strikes the mind of the spectator that they are possibly of Chinese origin, which impression is confirmed by a complete examination.

Chinese Art has so much fallen off in modern times, that these Drawings may be considered as the very best specimens which could possibly be procured. Mr. Scarisbrick bought these volumes at a very high price.

2720 HEBREW-ITALIAN. PRECES ET PRÆCEPTA HEBRÆORUM, Hebraice, small 4to. a beautiful specimen of Caligraphy, written in very elegant RomanoJewish Characters, with points, and having the commencing words in LETTERS OF GOLD, surrounded by ornamental borders, painted in various colours, upon vellum, richly bound in green velvet, the sides and edges thereof protected with centres, (having a lion rampant and three stars, as arms, engraved thereon), corners and clasps of solid silver, £35. Sæc. XV.

Illuminated Hebrew MSS. by Italian Artists are of very rare occurrence. This elegant specimen of Italian Art was a marriage gift, it is in the purest state of preservation. Some of the Prayers are intermixed with Benedictions in Italian, but written in Hebrew characters.

2721 LITURGIA HEBRAICA, cum punctis, small folio, Fine Manuscript of the XVIth Century, UPON VELLUM, written in black ink, interspersed with red and green, one of the headings finished with green and gold, the margins of a few leaves ornamented with curious drawings, in fine preservation, bound in morocco, with joints, in a case, £12. Sæc. XVI. 2722 HINDOO MYTHOLOGY. A FULL SERIES OF ALL THE DEITIES AND INCARNATIONS OF THE HINDOO RELIGION, with some PORTRAITS OF INDIAN AND PERSO-INDIAN PRINCES, together 111 EXQUISITE DRAWINGS, comprising about 250 subjects, the largest measuring 14 inches by 10, carefully designed and executed in RICH COLOURS AND GOLD, by most accomplished Native Artists during the last Century, Persian and Sanscrit names above each Drawing, with unarranged English explanations made in India; all the Drawings mounted, and bound in 4 vols. folio, old blue morocco, gilt edges, £55. (ca. 1750)

A Collection important for its artistic and Mythological value. The Hindoo Pantheon surpasses that of Greece by the extraordinary variety in the forms of its Gods, and by their still more wonderful achievements. The belief of the Hindoos in these Heroes of the Vedas is universal and likely to remain so, in spite of civilising and missionary efforts. To all students of the Vedantic philosophy the above collection will be highly instructive, it ought to find a resting place in some Public Library in England or on the Continent.

2723 PERSIAN ART. FIRDOUSI, SHAH NAMAH, 4to. a Persian MS. beautifully written in a clear minute hand, in four columns, within gold lines, the headings in gold and coloured inks, with two splendidly illuminated Anwans, and 27 MINIATURES coloured and gilt, some slightly injured, magnificently bound in whole red morocco super extra, inlaid with ornamental pieces of coloured leather, and exquisitely tooled, from the Earl of Aberdeen's library, £12. 12s

Sæc. XVI.

Considering the constant destruction of Literary treasures in the East, the above is a very EARLY SPECIMEN OF PERSIAN ART.

2724 NIZAMI, SECANDER NAMEH; BURRY and BHURRY, etc.; a very richly decorated PERSIAN Manuscript, written within FILLETS OF GOLD, round each page, while between every line and column throughout the volume is an ornament also of gold, folio, WITH FORTY MINIATURE ILLUMINATIONS, many the whole size of the page, ALL BRILLIANTLY PAINTED AND FINISHED WITH GOLD, green morocco, £18. 18s

2725 SOZ GUDÁZ NAW'I (Songs of Burning Passion), large 8vo. a Persian MS· with 7 singularly curious ILLUMINATIONS OF THE FULL SIZE OF THE PAGE, morocco, £4. 4s (? 1750) Of the numerous Oriental MSS. with illuminations which have passed through my hands, I never had one approaching the above in delicacy of design and softness of expression. The usual outré colouring is entirely avoided here; and the drawings possess even the mellowness of the European Camaieu-gris style, so little expected in Eastern Art. The volume was brought from Persia by Sir Robert Campbell.

Sæc. XV.

Autograph MS. by the celebrated Ahmet, son of Yousef Ash Sharif of Broussa, who composed it for Mohammed II., the conqueror of Constantinople, in the year 863 A.H. In the year 1785, this manuscript belonged to a certain Ahmet Pascha, son of Ibrahim Nushed, and since the name of Sultan Mehemet the true owner of the book was very likely on the back of the first page, that page has been taken away to conceal the fact; but this does not injure the work, inasmuch as only the usual phrase: In the name of God, etc. is lost. The handwriting is splendid, and the whole of the book is executed in such a manner as to make it a fit present to a Great Prince. The author dedicates his work to the Sultan by a piece of poetry, the verses of which commence each by one letter of the sentence: Sultan Mehemet may God grant him victory over his enemies. Mr. Catafago, who has examined the Arabic Manuscripts of the British Museum and the Bibliothèque Imperiale in Paris, says, that he has never met with a more interesting Manuscript; he values it at £10.
