PREFATORY ADVERTISEMENT.

THE PROPRIETORS of the CATHOLIC MAGAZINE, determined, as much as possible, to render their Work a respectable vehicle of important information relative to the great cause of Catholic Emancipation, and the unlimited exercise of universal Theo-Political Rights, have entirely re-arranged and enlarged their plan. Hitherto no other Monthly Publication of the kind has been attempted Catholics are branded as too selfish and narrow-minded to admit the principle of free discussion, and themselves so prone to persecution, as to shrink from all candid investigation of their principles. That this reproach may no longer exist, an opportunity is here open to all learned, liberal, and honest members of the Church, to wipe away the stain, and to shame into silence the advocates of intolerance, and the aspersers of the truth.

It is not, however, the Doctrinals of the Church that are here prineipally alluded to, but those numerous topics of misrepresentation, chiefly of a political nature, which originated, for the most part, in Luther's Reformation, and have been perpetuated, by the interested advocates of that change in religion, to the present day.

On these points, we not only invite but challenge investigation; and the pages of THE CATHOLIC MAGAZINE shall at all times be open to any fair and manly objections which learned and well-meaning Protestants may have to urge against the Catholic Claims. But to these points we feel ourselves compelled to restrict what may be denominated the CONTROVERSIAL DEPARTMENT of our work; at the same time reserving, in self-justice, a right to insert, even on Doctrinal points, what may have, in our estimation, an obvious tendency to promote the moral and spiritual interests of those persons who, it may be presumed, will form the bulk of our readers; for it should be clearly understood, that this Work is devoted, to all intents and purposes, to the service of the CATHOLICS, as such, and is not intended to be the medium of what might tend unnecessarily to disturb their
