THE chief object which the Author has set before himself in the production of these Readings, was to make them, as far as he was able, simple, brief, and devout. He has also endeavoured to follow week by week the course of the Church's Teaching throughout the year, and to make that Teaching practical. Most of the Readings are either the Author's own Sermons condensed, or his Sermon notes expanded. But in addition to these he has not scrupled to borrow the thoughts of others, either by Translating from Latin, French, and Italian, or by extracting from the works of English writers. Some of these translations or extracts are taken from modern and living as well as from ancient Authors. In the former case he trusts |
