Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain :
God is His own Interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

WALKING WITH GOD. Gen. v. 24.

A calm and heavenly frame;

A light to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb!

Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord ?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and His word?

What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! But they have left an aching void The world can never fill.

Return, O holy Dove, return!
Sweet messenger of rest!

I hate the sins that made Thee mourn,
And drove Thee from my breast.

The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from Thy throne,
And worship only Thee.

So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;

So purer light shall mark the road
That leads me to the Lamb.

WISDOM. Prov. viii. 22-31.

RE God had built the mountains,

"E Or raised the fruitful hills;

Before He fill'd the fountains
That feed the running rills;
In me from everlasting,
The wonderful I AM
Found pleasures never wasting,
And Wisdom is my name.

"When, like a tent to dwell in,
He spread the skies abroad,
And swathed about the swelling
Of Ocean's mighty flood;
He wrought by weight and measure,
And I was with Him then :
Myself the Father's pleasure,
And mine, the sons of men."

Thus Wisdom's words discover
Thy glory and Thy grace,
Thou everlasting lover
Of our unworthy race!
Thy gracious eye surveyed us,
Ere stars were seen above;
In wisdom thou hast made us,
And died for us in love.

And could'st Thou be delighted
With creatures such as we,
Who, when we saw Thee, slighted,
And nailed Thee to a tree?
Unfathomable wonder,

And mystery divine !

The voice that speaks in thunder,
Says, "Sinner, I am thine ! "

O LORD, I WILL PRAISE THEE. Isaiah xii. 1.

I

WILL praise Thee every day,

Now Thine anger's turn'd away;
Comfortable thoughts arise

From the bleeding sacrifice.

Here in the fair gospel-field,
Wells of free salvation yield
Streams of life, a plenteous store,
And my soul shall thirst no more.

Jesus is become at length
My salvation and my strength;
And His praises shall prolong,
While I live, my pleasant song.

Praise ye, then, His glorious name,
Publish His exalted fame!

Still His worth your praise exceeds ;
Excellent are all His deeds.

Raise again the joyful sound,
Let the nations roll it round!
Zion, shout! for this is He;
God, the Saviour dwells in Thee.

SARDIS. Rev. iii. 1-6.

"WRIT

RITE to Sardis," saith the Lord, "And write what He declares, He whose spirit, and whose word, Upholds the seven stars : All thy works and ways I search, Find thy zeal and love decay'd; Thou art call'd a living church, But thou art cold and dead.

"Watch, remember, seek and strive, Exert thy former pains;

Let thy timely care revive,

And strengthen what remains;
Cleanse thine heart, thy works amend,
Former times to mind recall,

Lest my sudden stroke descend,
And smite thee once for all.

"Yet I number now in thee
A few that are upright;
These my Father's face shall see,
And walk with me in white.
When in judgment I appear,
They for mine shall be confessed;
Let my faithful servants hear-
And woe be to the rest!"

G

PRAYER FOR CHILDREN.

RACIOUS Lord, our children see,
By Thy mercy we are free;
But shall these, alas ! remain
Subjects still of Satan's reign?
Israel's young ones, when of old
Pharaoh threaten'd to withhold,
Then Thy messenger said, "No;
Let the children also go !"

When the angel of the Lord,
Drawing forth his dreadful sword,
Slew with an avenging hand
All the first-born of the land;
Then Thy people's doors he pass'd
Where the bloody sign was placed :
Hear us now upon our knees
Plead the blood of Christ for these!

Lord, we tremble, for we know
How the fierce, malicious foe,
Wheeling round his watchful flight,
Keeps them ever in his sight:
Spread Thy pinions, King of kings!
Hide them safe beneath Thy wings;
Lest the ravenous bird of prey
Stoop and bear the brood away.

EXHORTATION TO PRAYER.

WHA

HAT various hindrances we meet
In coming to a mercy-seat !

Yet who that knows the worth of prayer,
But wishes to be often there?
